    Extra cigarette socket

    Hi all,
reading forum about putting sat nav in the stag, and I liked the idea about putting one in centre air vents.I have bought cigarette socket 12v/24v with 10 amp inline fuse, my question is how to wire it up because I would like it to go off with ignition. Many thanks Steve

You may have a spare terminal on one of the ignition relays (the relay will click when you turn on the ignition) you could use that!

Silly question but where is the ignition relay . Cheers Steve

Behind the parcel shelf, you will see some silver boxes. I think I had a spare terminal on the top right relay. If you hold the relay while turning on the ignition you will feel them operate. I think there are 2 ignition relays.

Sensible to use the inline fuse because as far as I can make out the relays are not fused, also like the idea of sat nav with power through central vent, let us know how you get on.

Yes no problem Ray. The black wire on cig socket I presume is an earth.Sorry to ask so many questions but electrics I struggle with but ok when pointed in the right direction. Many thanks Steve

The circuits coming off the two Ign controlled relays are fused (or in the case of the Window Motors, an inline self-resetting circuit breaker). According to my wiring diagram for the Mk2, one relay powers the overdrive (fused @ 10A) + Window Motors (with Circuit Breaker), the other goes through the "Heater Motor" fuse (25A) which then goes to the Heater Motor + Heated Rear Window. If you don't use the HRW, then lift off the White/ Green wires (one for the HRW; the other for its Indication Light) and connect to there for your extra 12V socket outlet (obviously the switch will need to be on!). Keeps it simples! And the circuit will be fused at 25A, though most Cigarette Lighter plugs I've come across are fused internally @10A, so a fault on the SatNav shouldn't affect the heater.

If you do wish to retain the HRW circuit, then you could tap into the wire on the other side of the HRW swich (looks like Purple/ Orange). The very small demand of a SatNav (guess <1A) doesn't put too much additional demand on this circuit.

Cheers for that Jonno, is black wire just an earth wire. Steve

Yes, The black is the earth to the relay coils, the coil live (from the Ign Switch) is white - this white one isn't fused so comes straight off the battery (via the Ign Sw). Always good to isolate the battery before working on electrics!

Sorry Jonno told you I'm no good with electrics, so do you mean black has to go to coil , it can't just go to body of car, sorry again it really has to be in lay mans terms for me to understand. Steve

Yes use of black wire is generally the earth,

Steve, the relay is like a switch, actuated electrically. It comprises a coil (loads of turns of wire on a bobbin) which has an iron rod in the bobbin hole physically attached to the contacts. When the coil is energised, the iron rod is pulled into the bobbin by the magnetic force and causes the contacts to operate. The black wire connects between the car body (-ve, or sometimes referred to as "earth" in a car) and one end of the coil and the white wir.e connects to the other side. The white wire becomes live at 12V when the Ignition is on.

Not to be confused with the ignition coil which is performing a totally different function.

                          Hope this makes it clearer.
