    steering rack overhaul

    Hi All

Has anybody on here got experience of overhauling the steering rack? The seal kit plus new gaiters only comes to about 30 quid as opposed to a recon unit which is 150+ quid.

The rack is off a car that has only done 60,000 miles so I am not anticipating there being much wear.

Any tips, special tooling required, pitfalls to avoid etc . All usefull information gratefully received as always.

    Regards

    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

I did this s few years ago. I followed the instructions posted on triumphstag.net. Click on 'Technical Area', then on 'Suspension and Steering'. Scroll down and there is the dismantling and assembly instructions, with links to diagrams.

    Nospecial tools are needed.

    Tip: Cleanliness is paramount.

    Dave.

Did mine a few years back as it leaked like the Exon Valdes. I'd only considerrecon if there's play between the rack and pinon. All I did was buy a kit from Peterh and renew all the seals and also reshim the inner joint on the track arms.

          Bruce,

Yes I did the control valve seals, but would probably not on a future rebuild unless they really needed it. They are a teflon type of material and like a square section 'O'-ring ISTR.Not easy to get into position without damage. I was afraid I had stretched them, but they settled down and the rack was a joy to use afterwards.
