    HEADER TANK (AGAIN )

At last I have found a suitable header tank to do the conversion on the cooling system .............or at least I thought I had its of a ford cosworth and the perfect shape to fit around the suspension strut but on getting it home I now notice that there it no overflow on it I don't mean there's no hose I mean no overflow its a sealed unit just two holes one in and one out .The question is will this make a difference or will it still work without the overflow .

Is there a pressure cap? If not, it is not safe to use it as pressure could increase until something goes bang.

          Its got two caps

When the pressure lifts the seal in the cap, where does the water go?

The normal route is into the neck of the filler and out of the overflow.

Just been to the garage to investigate .It is a screw on cap the inside centre of the cap is spring loaded making it a pressurised cap , the threads that the cap screws on to has slots cut in them so I presume that if the pressure gets to great the inner cap lifts and the water is pushed down the threads and over the top of the tank .I cant post a picture because my daughter has taken my camera to Spain with her (kids )

That should be OK, but depends on what the pressure cap is rated at. Does it have a level switch? One of the reasons I fitted my (Merc) tank was that I would be warned of any leak before it got critical.

Hiya John, make sure both connections to the tank are below the water level, otherwise on cooling the engine just sucks air. The cap sounds the same as a Volvo one, that's rated at a fraction over 21 lbs. Martin.

well I have given up on the ford header tank would not fit. But the good news is I found a volvo one and its now fitted it has a low water warning on it but I haven't wired it in yet . I will need a bit of advise on doing that ..........i am a bit thick when it comes to electrics :P

                        John,

I have just fitted my Volvo tank to my new Stag. I wired the warning switch in quite simply. Took a feed from the fused side of the ignition controlled fuse. Connected this to one side of a warning buzzer, which I ty-wrapped to the relay board. Then fed a wire from the other side of the buzzer, through the grommet near the wiper motor and connected it to the switch. The other side of the switch goes to earth. You could substitute a warning light for the buzzer.

I like your header tank. Which model of Volvo does that come from? Mine is from a 760 and is a bit longer. Yours look a bit neater.

The tank is of a V70 very pleased with the fit . The wiring sounds simple will give it a go. where did you get the buzzer . I thought of wiring mine to the seat belt warning light as I no longer use it but in bright sun light it may be hard to see ,a buzzer may be better

                            John,

Suitable buzzers are available from Maplins, or any electronics parts shop or boating parts shop. Millions on ebay for a few pence. Just type '12v buzzer' into the 'Find' box.
