    Bottom of the pile....

Can anyone explain why my 2 of favorite classics are so badly received by other 'collectors' ?

The car that should have been a Merc beater ..... our very own Triumph Stag. everyone loves the Tr's and MGs but the Stag........

And the XJS. This car should be out there with the E type. But.....

Oh and yes. I do have both...

I do love the xjs but seeing as it's about as long as a cruise ship and very tight 2+2 that in a covertible looks more like a two seater. I think jaguar got the seating allowance wrong. It's just too big to warrent a two seater. Having said that I wish I had the space for one as they will go into interceptor territory price.
As for the stag I think it's history tells it's story. The triumph snag. Only yesterday a friends stag over heated with Jack shaft failed. And if you then invest in a none standard engine the price to buy one is even lower.
Even though stag prices are low if they were higher I would have never of had the chance to own one so I'm glad of the history and love proving the doubters wrong.

+1 to all of that. I walked past an F model Jag yesterday with the top down. I could not have got my hand down between the front and back seats. Why do they keep doing that?

Confused. There are no back seats in an F type?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Oops, it was just a casual walk past and at a glance it looked as though they were supposed to to be seats! Shoulda gone somewhere else for my specs!

There isn't generous rear legroom in my ser.2 XFR either, maybe 2" or so but I suppose you could ram your nose against the screen, doing similar to your front passenger, thus allowing rear passengers to do other than lie on the seat with their legs up. The hood mechanism is clever, but it takes up a lot of space, twice as much as the Stag's.

I bought a new XJS convertible in 1990, it was the only way I could see the car as good looking. I always loathed the rear flying buttresses and Steam Locomotive rear window on the Coupe. At that time, Jaguar were being more practical and honest, there was no back seat at all, just a lockable cubby hole. Fair enough....

.....And then, Princess Diana dumped hers as she could not get rear child seats in, chopping it in for a Merc. of all things. Jaguar reacted quickly, fitting a rear seat but drawing attention away from the fact that it could only be used as described above.

I think the only XJS I might go back to is the 3.6 Cabriolet, much more rigid with no scuttle shake. But no more rear legroom!

            Regards

            Steve

"Can anyone explain why my 2 of favorite classics are so badly received by other 'collectors'' ?

              Stag,

              Jackshafts made from cheese paste
              Cylinder heads corroded onto blocks
Overheating caused by perming any and all of the above
Inlet manifolds misfitting (often caused by badly skimmed heads
              Water pump failures and leaks
              Steering racks that leak
Myriad any other faults that anybody whom owns a Stag can list for you.

All these can and have been overcome and current owners realise that, HOWEVER people who may be in the market for a classic still have the Clarkson, Quentin craptrap and other knownothings rantings in their ears and are persuaded to buy other classics...good.

I'm assured enough in my own choice of realising what the Stag is, and what excellent affordable classic motoring I have. Unfortunately when the day comes that the general public realise that in the main (review the forum threads, we still get "Groundhog day" fixings of many of the above points), Stags are now reliable classics they will enter the realm of inflation that afflict other motoring icons. The secret of buying well is knowing more than the majority of the market, whilst we know this information we have the advantage...revel in it and enjoy it.

Most people who look down on Stags are motoring snobs in my book they are sadly misinformed . When I show my Stag on the info sheet I Put first. NO its does not have a Rover engine NO it does not overheat . These are the answers now here are the facts . Then I list the refinements the Stag had that were unheard of for the time it was made . Most people are amazed that it had power steering and electric window let alone an adjustable steering column etc. One local Classic car club meet I went to the chairman said Oh you got here with out breaking down then . Of course I challenged the B***dy snob and what do you mean by that , "Oh nothing " and walked off. I never went back .
