Talking about how fast a Stag reaches a certain figure, I think I would be more interested to know (perhaps a Poll) on how quickly spending on the Stag (excluding purchase cost) went from nought to £6,000.

I could work out when I achieved that figure if I tried, and how much the total-to-date is, but I have had my car for quite a few years now.

The Stag is slow by modern day standards. As a spotty teenager I got to drive a 3.0ltr GXL capri. the first car I ever drove that pushed you back in the seat.

In my life time I have owned somewhere near 40 cars (possibly more) in the last 40 years. the fastest regards acceleration I can recall was a 3.0ltr X type Jag (245BHP) IIRC and the 2.7ltr Peugeot 407 coupe. Twin turbo Diesel.

I would even suggest our current Land Rover (2.0 ltr supercharged diesel (190bhp) would have the edge on your average Stag even though it weighs in at 2 tons. The stag isn't a fast car but a lazy cruiser.

As Jason said earlier if you want fast try a bike, My Triumph sprint (1050cc) has 125 bhp and only has to move 180 kgs. that puts a smile on your face

Terry, my Stag owes me just over £12k That includes buying and restoring (bought in April 2009)

Sad to say my Stag was beaten today by an MGB - although I could hear he was really gunning it and management was sitting beside me telling me firmly not to open the throttle fully!

That really is quite sad, mind you my Midget is quicker than my Stag, but then it's also quicker than the 911 up the road.
All depends on what's under the bonnet.
                  ...........but an MGB?........oh dear.

I found our previous, manual, Stag, to be rather quick off the line, and almost always took the lead at traffic lights. Especially up to 30ish mph, where the low weight really is an advantage. At higher speeds, the aerodynamics of moderns work to their advantage, but even then the Stag could cope very well when using the proper gears. The performance certainly never came short for my taste. As much I would enjoy a spirited drive, I would class it a sporty GT, because of the ease, driveability and comfort, but lacking the dedication of a proper sports car. Mind you, I'm comparing with my Lotus Esprit SE with twice the power for the same weight. I'd even go so far as to say on a typical classic car run, the Stag would get driven just as quick as the Esprit, unless I was really pushing to overtake the rest of the pack.
A modern may waft you about swiftly, but still feels boring, without much sense of occasion.

Added, our current automatic Stag does seem to lack some performance, being too smooth to feel fast. So I wouldn't call that sporty, even though on my last run after setting up the carbs I had no problem making the tyres squeel and the back end step out.

I bet you wished you had one of those now Ian they are fetching serious money. My MOT chap has cracking example.

Personally I see the Stag as comfortable cruiser and certainly isn't anywhere near my TVR or my daily both of which will do the 0-60 dash in well under five seconds and amazingly the daily is a diesel drinker too which will do near 40MPG .
So when I drive the Stag I enjoy the pleasure of no one taking me on or sitting up my backside most people who are interested wave or pass favourable comments and I don't even get tempted at the traffic light dash which I get enough of with the other two motors. The TVR might as well have a sign saying come on have a go to every lairy hatchback driving cap wearing t@sser ......like moths in a light shop
Still it's fun to show them occasionally and make a bit of noise

                        Right back to work
                        Cheers Glyn

The owner driver of the rally car I crew for has a Brooklands Capri which is a lovely car, so understated that it is ice cold cool. He's also got a Stag which he is going to recommission, once pigs start flying.
Have to say that 0-60 is not really my thing, I don't like dropping the clutch, bad for driveshafts etc, but once your off, anything goes. I'd be more interested in how the car works 50-90, that is where most of the overtaking is done.

                          John.

Interesting comments and so far. The title 0-60 was more of a way of saying does your stag really respond or is it a soft easy rider. I think a auto vs manual makes a big difference too. My days of boy racers foot are long gone and the only time I race in anger is after being cut up but the usual twat in his modern. Even then I prefer to change lanes tactically and get in front without racing just to prove the point you won't get there any quicker pal.
So it seems I either have a rare breed of a stag who has a personality of a Ferrari ( after all its called rudi ) or I'm just getting so old anything quick feels so much faster. Either way I just love it.

Regarding the MGB, be aware that some owners are dropping Maestro twin cams in which give about 140bhp.

I'd accept that the Stag isn't up there with modern equivalents such as BMW 6, Merc SL, nor even Toyota Celica or Honda Integra. But I seem to be away from most of the traffic at lights and can show a clean pair of heels on motorways to those who like to tailgate you into the left lane while you're overtaking a line of traffic, or the 45mph dawdles on fast A roads. It's an agreeably civilised way to move around more quickly than most. It gives a sense of occasion which I've only had in the past from a W124 Mercedes.

The Maestro never had a twin cam fitted - best it ever had was the Montego Turbo SOHC O series. If it was a twin cam it would have to be an M or T series from an 800 or 200/400 series.
