No. April 2018 (assuming Gov't continue the rolling 40 year programme). It becomes tax-free from 1 April in the year (Jan - Dec) following its 40th birthday of manufacture. I'm expecting mine to be tax-free next year (manufactured Sept 76, registered July 77).
My Stag is exactly the same age as yours. I was also under the misapprehension that it would be tax free next April. Hey Ho ...I shall have to wait another year...
V.E.D. is the most inequitable taxation system dreamed up by any stretch of the imagination. Any taxation system should be based on usage of the commodity to be taxed, i.e. the more you use , the more you pay. I would propose that V.E.D. should be abolished and all taxation placed on fuel usage. The less miles you drive, the less tax you pay. I would also make a prediction, there would be a lot less cars on the roads when everyone had to think before making spurious journeys and wasting fuel. Finally I would propose that since the V.E.D. disc has been abolished from vehicle windscreen it should be replace with a valid disc showing third party insurance cover
Many years ago I proposed (to the Department of Transport through my MP) that VED should be abolished (and fuel rates increased to cover the cost), MoT introduced from 12 months old, insurance checked as part of MoT (this was before all the on-line checks so then it was checked by the Post Office when you renewed your tax) and the Mot issued (by post to the registered address) as a disc to be displayed (equivalent issued for new cars). That would have saved millions in administration at DVLA, which was probably why nothing happened.
