Flash car for loveable rogues! Haha

Might be a repeat - did you see last night's The Cars That Made Britain Great; The Stag 14.56 mins in!

Says they go for thick end of £30k... what?? That can't be right, I assume with an A condition Mk 1 and engine rebuilt, I need to change my valuation from £9,500?

Wasn't the Stag more a car which ruined Great Britains reputation as a car manufacturer rather than a car which made Britain great?
    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

Is that why we still have so many Stags on our roads today? Most problems with the Stag is idiots not knowing how to look after their vehicles, and that applies to most other car owners as well. All very well to blame the car makers, very wise forty years later but that's what we had in the 70's. I seem to remember a mate of mine pulling up on my drive in 1973 with a two year old Ford Cortina. It leaked petrol all over my drive and there was rust coming through both front wings!

In think you misheard the reference to £30k Giles. What they were saying was it cost £2k when new which, in today's money, is about £30k.

Things didn't improve much into the 80s. My first brand new car was a Vauxhall Cavalier which I bought in January '86. Within 3 months it had rust coming out everywhere: rear doors, front wings, bonnet panel, under the bonnet, through the roof. It went back to the dealer several times to get it sorted....

The programme said something along the lines that Stag owners then became BMW owners

😀 obviously if I didn't like the Stag I probablw wouldn't have restored one to near pristine condition, but I thought the Stag was a complete disgrace in the market which it was supposed to dominate (US). Its bad reputation (whether it is deserved or not) lives to this day. Of course it enjoys popularity now and presents a pretty picture .... but in a list of things which made Britain great it must be pretty low on the list. Perhaps we can agree with it today making Britain nicely nostalgically photogenic along with thatched Cotswolds cottages and the odd Spitfire flying above?

Does anyone know what the target production quantities were? The quality target was to compete against Mercedes, wasn't it?

I was talking to Chris Witor a couple of days ago who was surprised that the total production was less than thirty thousand, when about 200,000 of the big saloons were made. I would imagine that Triumph were hoping for production runs well into the hundred thousand level.

Enjoyed the show, presented the Stag better than Glen Philipster and Salexi Ayle

No but it did trot out the usual "2 Dolomite engines joined together". At least Clarkson said they were welded. The cock on that programme said it was Sellotape!
