is there a way to strip repair using bike cables etc than can be so easily and cheaply bought?

Yes, get a bike brake cable from anywhere that's long enough carefully drill out the cables from the choke pull and solder in the new cables.
keep the same outers song replace them with the bike ones.
Did mine like this years ago and still both in place.

If your current cables are ok then you can just replace the outside part. If they are fraid then just solder the ends and carefully re twine them.

Once you get them off you can lubricate them in the new outside sheath. I would make ends as good as you can then pull through .
The choke route is rather a journey so the strength of the original joint between cable and knob needs to be very strong ofcourse if your confident have a go but I preferd to trust the original build and repair the bit on the end.

I don't think the original pull handle fits the new one either but I didn't know the news one can also fail glad I stuck with original now.

James Paddock do a replacement Choke knob fixed by a grub screw. You can then use any bike cable.

the soft metal soon works the grub screw loose,and the knob needs re tightening ,then a bigger grub ! otherwise a wobbly knob
