    Fitting a modern radio

Had a search, but not found anything useful in previous threads. Trying to fit a modern radio with CD & Bluetooth and am a bit alarmed by the size of the existing hole. The width is OK, but the hole height is ~15mm greater than that of the DIN cage. This seems a big gap to accommodate with the fold-out tangs on the cage and I'm concerned that it won't be held firmly.

What have others found - am I just being a wet nelly, or do I need to fit some battens inside the apperture to get it stable?

    Thanks

Personally filled in the hole with battens, and made an aluminium facia plate to cover up.
That was many years before you could buy an adapter to fill in the hole to the correct DIN size, still available I believe from Stag parts specialists.

Do a googly search, Jonno. There are several adaptors to choose from.
I chose one of the angled type (about 15') as the modern radio seems to be a tad longer than the the original and there's not too much space what with the heater, etc., back there.

          Thanks Mike,

I've bought a set of bezels, but these just cover the hole rather than providing much by way of support. Do you know if Paddock's version provides support? If not, I'll call them in the morning.

Thanks for the tip, Paul. I'd come to the same conclusion, though the bezels I have can be stacked if necessary to set it out a bit (there's no chance of fitting the spiggot on the back of the radio!).

The stereo space is such a large cavity and I would be curious how the much lighter units were fitted there in the first place in the 70's. Perhaps the size was allocated to cater for the large '8 Track' stereos of the time?
I have seen plates welded in place making the cut out smaller and offering some support but hard to keep the heavier modern head units horizontal. As I have no welding gear I just relied on some spare angled aluminum held in place with 4 small mushroom head bolts and 4 captive bolts with a flat profile head to hold the head units cradle allowing the head unit to slide through; these bolts have a metric thread and are the same used to hold the rubber front bumper strip on my 2500S which I bought from Rimmers.
There is very good support for the head unit but it is still likely to vibrate and I will have to place a large rubber pad/support underneath.
Fortunately I still have the the near impossible to get original plastic blanking plate/stereo surround that matches the directly below plastic heater surround and I have slightly trimmed this slightly to fit around the protruding part of the head unit cradle.SonyToSort 1234.jpgSonyToSort 1241.jpg634825.jpg

Use the adapter from Robsport, problem solved.

Hi Jonno, your new radio should come with all the fittings. Bought a Caliber on ebay and went straight in. Will send pics later if you want. Time for work now!

Thanks guys for all your helpful suggestions. I've gone with the Paddock fitting (seems identical to the Robsport one). I like the substantial fitting used by STypeR, but prefer not to have to strip the console if this can be avoided. I can see that some further support might be needed at the back end, but one step at a time

The pic shows the aperture in mine - seems original. The "original" radio fitted by the PO was secured with bent sheet-steel plates (as a crank) on both sides which had holes to slip onto the volume and tuning spindle bushes. The other end of these crank plates fitted behind the dash, and the radio facia plate fitted over the spindle bushes to clamp it onto the console.

Any more pictures will be welcome.

                      Thanks again

I used one from this set and fitted a Travelpilot single din cd radio unit.

the adapter from James Paddock or Robsport does the job fine

I have used one to fit a modern Alpine stereo in my Stag

I have a new pare adapter in my spares as well if you haven't ordered it already - pm me

                          Cheers Darren

I've got a similar pack, but there's not enough substance, bearing in mind the 15mm overall gap top - bottom. Hopefully my Paddock's fitment will be here tomorrow.
