    What's yours worth...?

Having recently had my house been broken into whilst on holiday, I was pleased that my insurance cover did the job.

Idiot burglars emptied out our key pot in a failed attempt to get out through the back door; I was relieved that they didn't use the Stag and garage keys in front of them!

However, with my Stag mk 1 insurance renewal today, I've decided to increase the current £9.5K (under) valuation; in comparison to other cars I see (with tidy body and new engine rebuild), I think mine is nearer £13-14K* (*subject to negative Dom Jolly effect!). I will use the club valuation scheme, once my logins work for the members area!

It's a kind of how long is a piece of string question, but it would be good to know what others think..?

    Cheers

Bottom line is - how much would it cost to replace yours if it were stolen, or a total write-off.

My experience with Carol Nash is that they'll quote you for what agreed value you want, but this will only be implemented on your policy subsequent to submitting required docs. Last year, I got an agreed value of £13k, based on photos I submitted. Talking to others at a Triumph event, there was unanimous opinions that this was undervalued. I used the SOC service and got a valuation of £18k which Carol Nash will accept (need to resubmit last year's photos as well). It may be simpler if you're with RH as the club's partner, but I don't have experience.

Just a little 'post it' note to add the the bottom of this thread, information only.

When renewing my insurance recently (Lancaster) it was suggested that I might consider increasing my agreed value from 18k. I thought this was reasonable as things seem to be on the way up price wise, so I sent my latest pictures, updated mod.s list etc. to support a small increase to 19k.

Good news, this was agreed after a few weeks, but!!

It was accompanied by bill for an additional £15.50 to 'reflect the increased risk linked to the new agreed value'. Fair enough, more risk, more premium, I have no problem with that, but there's another but!! £15.50 is way more than 1/18th or 1/19th (depending how you see it) of the original 18k value premium.

Just something to be aware of - If I renew with them next year I will be checking to see if that £15.50 is not being automatically added on every year. I do understand there would be admin. costs of a value review process, but that is a 'one off' cost, the increase is not pro-rata in percentage terms and should not be taken as a benchmark or starting point for next year.

        Regards

The other thing is don't keep your keys on the hook or in a key pot while you're away. Some pals of mine had their house broken into, the criminals took their keys, loaded their valuables into their car and drove off with that as well.

My car keys are always hidden somewhere in the house, usually I have to search for them when I come back!

Where do you hide them? I'm looking for ideas!

I have a lockable key safe attached to a wall in the kitchen which I use when we are away. Looks more like a small cupboard or electricity supply box than a safe. The key to that goes with me including the key to a strong floor safe we also have in a utility cupboard. Living on a complex though we also inform our neighbours that they shouldn't hear anything from our apartment or see anyone in it. That's on advantage of living in a Community over a private property. The Stag itself I will be moving to an underground garage when we are next away, into a parking space owned by a friend of ours.

Interesting - I have renewed today and increased to 14K with RH but they kept the premium the same (from £9.5K).
Now I am thinking that is undervalued too, from what's been said here.
Thorny subject - next up is my mortgage which is up for review in October. Don't start me on mortgages, tried to borrow £XK and it took 9 months and a few DNA tests. When I bought my first place in '98, you just borrowed 5-8 times your salary! No questions asked. Those days have gone! But at least I can live in my Stag!

                      Too true Richard
How mad is that not to take a Golf or a Stag! Learnings for me are to get DNA spotting on everything (a kit from the Police), get alarm, floodlight and extra handles on large windows!
And have a technology box (and maybe put keys in), to put somewhere when you are away!
