    In tank fuel catalyst

Has anyone used a in tank fuel catalyst instead of a liquid additive for lead free fuel, the valves on my car are standard as left the factory, I use a liquid additive, but have seen these balls advertised on the web that you place in the fuel tank, also seen an inline version that fits in the fuel line.
Can anyone shed some light on the success of these items.
    Many thanks

Yes I can shed some light on the success of these systems...there isn't any.

I thought these particular "witches brew" had been discredited long ago and placed alongside the alchemy in science that existed to change lead to gold, which has equal success to these systems...ie none.

Any valve protection success claimed for by these tricksters purely exists because of the "memory" and existing protection of the lead previously pounded into the valve seats and valves in years gone by. Unless you will be using prolonged high speed running at revs over 5000 for many thousands of miles this existing "leaded" protection will avoid severe valve seat pocketing. Save your money.

    Micky.

When I was still working one of our smaller suppliers dipped their toes in the water with these as fuel savers. The in line type cut into the fuel line. They had a huge folder full of testimonials claiming they worked wonders.

Our engineering director agreed a trail (at no cost to us) on three different vehicle types for a period of three months They made no difference what so ever. At the time our annual fuel bill was £30m and MPG was monitored closely and recorded to provide the data for HMRC to claim back the fuel duty rebate the company qualified for.

With a fleet of over 2000 vehicles if they were any good and made any fuel saving they would certainly be fitted to London Buses in our fleet.

Just run it on unleaded, it will be fine. You may need to tweak the timing a little bit, but only if it pinks.

The little bag of Silver Space Rocks is a complete and utter waste of money. It has been hawked around for decades, popping back onto the market whenever a fresh promoter or marketing opportunity arises. The changeover to unleaded petrol gave it a good opportunity to refresh the claims made for it, and that happened again when a growing LPG market presented fresh valve erosion concerns to exploit. Again, many owners / installers were sucked in by it.

When the product has lain dormant for a decade or so, there are many fresh car owners to dupe and a market re-appearance is certain, perhaps using a slightly different spin on a claim that is virtually impossible for the average owner to determine one way or the other. The classic car following presents it with a small but evergreen demand to create for itself, but of course there is no organisation with the funds (or will) to run properly conducted tests on behalf of individual onwers.

We're all the same in some ways, we like to buy things to do our car 'good', and when we've spent the money we want to believe it works, perhaps to go on and defend the choice to non-believers - especially when the alternative is to admit that money was squandered and the buyer was gullible. No-one wants to feel a fool. This is the principle such a product depends upon, the physics don't matter one jot, and in this case, they don't exist. If it really did work, Silver Space Rocks would be in the fuel tank of everthing from the humblest Lawnmower to the Space Shuttle, but you don't see any manufacturer 'installing' it to gain a market lead.

In conclusion, you'd be better off dropping coins to the value of the cost of the rocks directly into your tank instead of buying the stuff. Then, at least, you could get the money back!

            Regards

If ever I had the time to waste (unlikely) I'd love to find out what process the Silver Space Rocks are the waste product of. Neat trick, sell your rubbish! Perhaps I've got it all wrong and there's some sad person painting bits of Coke (the kind used for Fires) and then putting them in used Onion bags to make a living.

Your choice for peace of mind, but there really is no need.

Hardly, I just bought some last year before I realised you don't need additives. If I can offload them, well, so good!
