Stag Ownerhip - Wish List and Costs

We all love our Stags (well for some of the time anyway), but how many of us have certain reservations when it comes to owning one, and things we would change if we could.

Had my car for over 22 years now, 10 years in the U.K., last 12 in Tenerife, and some further changes I would like to see if possible regarding my Stag ownership would be :-

1) Finding a garage where I could store my hardtop and spares, and work on the car in peace.

2) Replacing the BW65 auto box with a smoother 4 speed unit which reduces top gear revs.

3) Stopping it refuse to start every 100 or so attempts (usually in embarassing places), necessitating a good strong tap on the starter motor to get the teeth to mesh again).

4) A cure for my Stag paranoia when out driving the car so not always worrying what might possibly go wrong next.

Overall the car has not cost me a lot of money considering the length of time I have had it, and it has only been off the road for a couple of Winters in the U.K. when the weather was bad.

I am no mechanic, but have mostly maintained the car myself, only using a Garage for things beyond my capabilities and needing specialist equipment and expertise. My biggest Garage bills to-date were back in 2003 (prior to Emigration), when in May I had a new crankshaft fitted, and later in November of that year had the steering rack & rear suspension rebuilt.

The first bill was for £1,102, and the second for £534. Largest bills after that have been mainy for resprays, as I have had it resprayed twice. The car did cost me £8,000 though when I bought it in 1994 as it was a low mileage one-owner vehicle.

2) don't need that my 65 changes smoothly, the petrol it saves ( lower revs) living on a small island would take a lifetime to recoup the cost
3) An original properly re conditioned starter including the solenoid never need to be beaten
4) I don't believe there is any need to be paranoid if the car is reasonably maintained. I would drive mine anywhere tomorrow without a thought

Terry why don't you order a new mohair soft top from somewhere like Aldridge there are plenty of tapiceria's that could fit it if you don't want to do it yourself ( that is something they are good at over here) and just dump the hardtop. I cant see the point of having a convertible in a place like this if you cant enjoy it, I've only had my car here 5 years and in that time the hardtop has remained in the roof of the garage, hindsight I should have sold it in the UK before I drove the car over, luckily enough it not in the way.

4. Wish people would stop telling me my engine Crap!, and the car should have been fitted with a Rv8.

4. Having driven to France a few times including twice in July, also have Daddies external water pump I don't have Stag Parania.
5. Also wish people would stop telling me stags overheat and TV8 is a crap engine

1) Garage to store would be good cover and gazebo have to make do
2) 5 speed gear box... coupled to the "Satan of engines" ( in a stag )
3) No starter problems see (2) also fitted HT starter to make sure
4) No paranoia see (2) and (3) oh and I got "recovery" just in case
5) Italian road trip here I come...
6) Want new leak proof roof.....wet bums are uncomfortable

Coolant still blowing past expansion tank ( 1 cup every 50 miles with no sign of combustion gasses in coolant) so it looks like new ewp and possibly head/inlet gaskets.

It's a beautiful day so I think I'll cut the grass and get 2 new tyres fitted to the Defender.

Replacement of Cornish MOT welding
Paint and waxoyled underside
New sub frame
Strengthened quill to prop shaft where it meets the differential
Replacement differential x 2
Second hand prop shaft
New front suspension now all polybushed
New radiator and cooling fan
New heater hose
All new hoses
New electronic ignition
Respray to hardtop
Storage frame for hard top
Dehumidifier for garage
4 new tyres

Time the car paid me back!
