    STUCK IN GEAR - help!

The Stag is in the paint shop for the finishing touches, and while moving the car about the shifter jammed up somewhere between reverse and neutral. The clutch seems operative because when depressed the car will roll. Any ideas as to how to pop the tranny into neutral? The old-timee shop owner suggests starting the car then pushing it hard and releasing the clutch. Or, perhaps the clutch needs just a little more throw, with adjustment at the lever?

This is particularly frustrating and surprising because the transmission was lovely and smooth - better than any TR i've ever owned.
    Thanks for your help

If the car will roll with the clutch pressed then it is not a gearbox problem, it is an engine problem. Gearbox is permanently connected to the rear wheels; the clutch separates it from the engine.

Yes, but it is a gear selection problem, they cannot select neutral, hence the car will only roll with the clutch pedal pressed. As he said it is stuck between reverse and neutral.

As stagmuffin said lift out thd gear lever and move the selectors.

David. It is a gearbox problem if the car won't roll with the clutch engaged but with the car apparently in neutral. As stagmuffin has diagnosed, the selector rods need realigning in the way he describes. This problem occurs when the parts become worn, and it becomes possible to almost engage another gear before the previous one being used has fully disengaged.

Thank you all for your responses. I had frankly forgotten that I could access the selector rods be pulling the gearshift lever. I should be OK now.
            Cheers

Got you - I mis-understood the original post, and I thought they were suggesting the gearbox was stuck in reverse and a forward gear at the same time. If that had been the problem, it wouldn't roll with clutch pressed.
I think we are saying it is trying to turn the engine when rolling without clutch pressed.

This morning in the paint shop I lifted the console wood etc and removed the gear shift lever. (No tiny spring and rod, of course) The lever lifted out easily and the rods were just as easily re-aligned. Started her up and once again shifted easily through the gears.
What might I do to prevent this happening again, short of pulling the engine and replacing the rods? I have replaced the selector forks, which were visibly worn. Perhaps the knob at the bottom of the shifter is worn and I should get a new one?
                Thanks

If you have removed the selector rods at some point it is possible you have lost the interlock plunger from the central selector rod, it stops this problem occurring.
I put up with this problem for about 15 years on my TR until I eventually got round to sorting it out.

I wish I'd taken pictures or good notes when I did the fork replacement, but I do remember those pesky ball bearings so have some rcause to hope that is not the problem.
                    Thanks
