    Wards headlight modification

I've now fittted the Wards modified headlight loom which allows all 4 on dip and all 4 on main using H4 bulbs - I had Cibie headlamps already so it was a pretty easy mod' but I also fitted some Phillips Blue Vision H4 bulbs (europarts 50% off so 4 for £40) and I have to say the difference is outstanding!
My standard Cibie units were good but with the additional 2 lights and with the Phillips bulbs it is possibly the best £100 I've spent on the car.
Well done EJW, excellent piece of kit/price and certainly not worth the agg of making your own.

    Cheers

The only thing i didn't like about wards loom, was the place they had the relays ( in engine bay ),i copied there loom but put my relays under parcel shelf, then you cant see any mods been done

agree was agg as if i haven't got enough things to do

I fitted mine to the panels behind the radiator grille, one each side so well out of the way unless you take the grille off.

Did that conversion years ago and kept on getting flashed by drivers as they though i had main beam on. It only cost me under £30 for all the headlamps. bulbs, relays and wiring. Its very, vary easy to make yourself, took minutes .

I've now gone for HID zennon dip beam set up. It will also work on main beam but didn't want that. That only cost £18 for bulbs, wiring, ballast and postage. Had to mod the headlamp bowls to get them to fit.

Now the headlight are like daylight on a sunny day.

What did you have to do to the head lamp bowls

The Zennon bulbs are bigger and they have three connectors. The back of the bowl had to be cut so they didnt fowl. Saying that i had to bring one lamp forward 10mm as the bulb was too close to the oil cooler.

What bulbs are you using? HID xenon H1 and H4 bulbs will fit standard bowl without cutting.
If you are buying such cheap HID kits make sure the bulbs are driven by AC and beam pattern is reasonable.

I brought the original Wards modified headlight loom what a pile of c^ap I had to rewire it and Purchase extra relays as it had the option of 4 dipped or 4 main and dipped at the same time it pulled the c^ap out of my electrical system and knackered the alternator. I now avoid ej wards upgrades like the plague.

                  Cheers Glenn

Thats true i remember the extra load on the alternator when you had all four light on, when you were at idle and put the light on the engine didn't like it. Main beam on all four is fine as your normally moving (at speed) so you don't notice.

My Zennon isn't replacement bulbs it the whole zennon system, 20,000 volts

By the way glenn its alive, well sort of, all the injectors now work. The engine went well lean when the turbo kicked in at 2500/3000 rpm. Clutch line is still an issue or it would have been down the air runway today.

Steve please make sure that you get some film of that beast running down the runway. it is a work of art seeing it up close and personal. Still cannot beleive that you have managed to cram that engine and turbos in the space available.

                      cheers Glenn

Just to reiterate - 4 and 4 not 4 and 8, they are properly adjusted so I don't get flashed by anyone at all and the main beam is as good as our discovery with HID lamps and that is a truly tall order

Well done Wards in my opinion and Philips for such excellent bulbs!

Just installed EJ Ward's headlight loom as well. I think it's also either 4 dipped or 4 main only... Not sure how you can tell if dipped are on at same time as mains. I'm still blinded and am seeing purple blotches in front of my eyes.

I had to make a jumper wire to connect 2 original main beam wire to the main beam switch wire, but that's ok. Put relays in engine bay for good access to fuses. I have a 115A alternator so I'm ready to run these search-lights.

                          Cheers

Have fun Tanya, now you can get your own back on all those that blind you normally - I can certainly compete with a Range Rover sport now which are always very bright!

My cars (MK2 LHD) already have the 4 main 2 dip setup, With the 4 H4 headlights I just needed to reduce the current going through yet another new dip switch..... :-(

I just bought the WARDS cable relay set and fitted it today. The only place l could see to fit the relays was above the expansion bottle. As this car is non-A/c I could bring all the cables through the lower of the 2 A/c holes to behind the grill and connect the ground wire to the convenient ground stud just there in the engine bay. The live feed at the moment goes behind the grill up between the radiator and body to the + terminal.
I had to adapt, extend and rewire a most of the wires so they would fit onto the original 4 light cable loom. NO instructions were included or on the are on their web page...Lucky l'm handy lol.
Also it took me hours to fit it ...and this was after buying a supposed ready to fit kit. (Note to Wards, your loom needs working on......call me lol )

How did you get it to work and placement on your car Tanya and why did you need to bridge the relays for the mains to work as each light has its own original fuse and the Wards thingy too ? Is the MK1 wiring so different ?
