First fast motorway run since the new wheels fitted and I must say it has transformed the car, no more shaking, vibration and a more comfortable ride ( Despite my apparent rubbish choice of tyres)

Would that be the TF1 Graham, and how far did you go to - Santa Cruz and back?.
All this talk of tyre degredation has me a little worried, as I think mine have been on since 2003 or even earlier
even though they haven't done a lot of mileage and look O.K.

Had to look that up - it's not far from San Juan, a nice place we haven't visited for quite a while.

Just had another look at my tyres - they look absolutely fine and are 185/70R14H Champion Courier
models bought as far back as May 2000, the set of 4 including new valves and balancing costing
£107.20 + £18.77 VAT from Central Tyres in Colwyn Bay.

I got them at the time to fit a set of new Alleycat Rallye Special alloys from Monarch, and like you, noticed straight away a big improvement in the car's handling.

Asw I've posted previously, my 30+ year-olds looked absolutely grand - no cracking, good tread and good grip in the dry (or wet if fully loaded, holiday style). Lightly loaded in the wet and they were verging on lethal. They were so good, I'd just assumed to PO had put them on relatively recently.

There have been reports on here of tyre failure (internal delaminatiing I think), IIRC around the 10 year mark. 7 years will do for me, no matter how much tread.

Happened to my dad in his 1959 Peerless. Fitted with Goodyear GT80's. Tyres looked perfect, approx half worn on the tread but absolutely no cracking or perishing of the rubber. Had a blow out of one of the rear tyres. When we looked at the tyre after it was removed from the wheel the side walls had totally delaminated. Thinking it was where it had blown out and run flat for a distance before the car stopped we looked at the other rear tyre. Once removed from the rim there was evidence of that delaminating on the inside of the side walls as well.

On a related note my wifes Mazda MX5 was fitted with Pirelli P5000 "Drago" tyres. They were only about 3 years old and lethal in the wet (only a 1.6 MX5 so not exactly a rocket ship). The rubber was also quite cracked around the side walls. The rubber was very hard. I "foolishly" replaced them with another set of Pirelli P5000's as they were O.E. fitment. Guess what, after just over 3 years, hard as nails, lethal in the wet and cracked and perished. Replaced them with Toyo Proxies which lasted 4 years before they wore out and were replaced. I think I posted some pics of the Pirellis on here at the time.

The set I bought for the 14's was 3years 7months ago and their 2/3rds done soft grippe rubber that wears out before the walls crack.

love the colour Graham, my first stag was a similar metallic blue - one of the ford metallics I will dig out some piccies.

                  The rims suit it beautifully
