Drew, during the recent German anual meeting in Plauen we sadly had 48 hours continuous rainfall--similar as in Munich with 100l/m2 during this paticular weekend. The wipers had a hard time to cope with the situation and I had time enough to watch the wear in the system over appr. 200 km on the beautiful rainy roads in Saxonia.
So, no it is not a question of preventive maintenance.

Many thanks Nigel and Steve. As far as possible I checked the splines for wear: seem to be ok. The wear must be in the drive system. So if it is no option to turn the rack 180 dgr. I can only turn the gear inside the box 180 degr. as proposed by Drew?

In case SOCTFL reads this thread: if the quality of new racks is really so bad is the remanufacturing of wiper racks a subject to step in?

          MandM.
SOCTFL works on the basis that if they are approached with a business proposition to remanufacture an obsolete part, or do something about a poor quality one, financial and engineering assistance may be given
to make a decent one become available. They are not empowered to "Set up in business" making stuff themselves.
As far as I know, no approach has been made on this one. If it is a common problem, perhaps a letter to the SOCTFL chairman (in the magazine) might get the ball rolling!
          Mike.

You need to ask how many racks need to be replaced to make it financially worthwhile. I have just replaced the drivers side wheelbox after wear on the splines caused the drivers side wiper to fail which seems to be more common than a worn rack.

As my dash is out, what is the slickest/best/magic grease for the cable and wheelhouses? Red lithium? Green waterproof wheel bearing? Black moly synthetic?
