    ZF HP22 Auto-box

    Hi all,
Is there anyone out there that could advise me on which is the best oil to use for a ZF HP22 auto-box and also, could you advise me on how to check the level in the auto-box. I would be most grateful for any advice given. Many thanks, Mike

Dexron 2. Level ground, engine warm and running, handbrake on, cycle through gears a couple of times, leave in N, remove dipstick, wipe clean and dip.

Hi guys - sorry to tag onto this discussion but will any ZF 4 speed hp 22 fit to a Stag? Monarch prices are not exactly cheap yet one of the gearbox specialist seems to offer such boxes for around £650. I'm keen to change my BW65 box.
            Thanks

will any ZF 4 speed hp 22 fit to a Stag? Pretty much, as long as it isn't a 4WD version. Jag XJ40 or BMW are popular. Land Rover no good.

Monarch prices are not exactly cheap yet one of the gearbox specialist seems to offer such boxes for around £650. Monarch sell the Tait & Lewis conversion kit. This includes a recondition 'box, bespoke bell housing, tailshaft engineered for speedo, bespoke gearbox mounting, propshaft, etc.

If you are going it alone, there is a considerable amount of research to do and you will need access to engineering (machining and welding) facilities. You will also have to figure out how to drive the speedo and sort out the inhibitor and reversing lights.

I've done it, as have others, but it isn't a straightforward 'bolt in'.

Thanks Dave. I suspect I'll have to bit the bullet and fork out Monarch's price. I'm not an engineer and have a limited range of tools. Does the Monarch kit cover ALL the bits for the conversion? I.E. Slips in as a straight swop?

I would get it done for you. The labour cost shouldn't add too much and your insurance company might want to see the bill to prove that the conversion was properly done.

Contact Clive Tait. His details are in the magazine inside front cover. He developed the conversion, along with Russel Lewis, and fits them for very little money on top of the kit.

                      Hi,
I am going to get a 4 speed autobox fitted this year and will get Clive to fit it as you can then be sure that all will be done correctly and if any problem arises he will sort it out.

I had a feeling that he no longer supplies anyone else with his boxes now due to problems. Call and email him to get a fix on this decision.

I spoke to an engineer friend a couple of days ago and he used to work with another box restorer who has now retired and said it is very very critical to ensure that all the pipes and connections are meticulously cleaned and this can take quite a lot of time but critical.

                      Good luck. John H
