This is a perennial problem for cars which are not used much - the material degrades way before the tread depth becomes a factor. Five years for a set of tyres is quite good if they spend most of the time stationary in the garage.
Avons are not a budget tyre. They are an excellent British brand, I have used them for many years including on my Mercedes C class, my partners Mercedes SLK and my own Stag. Unfortunately they are not supporting the 14" wheel size these days so I'll be looking for something else for the Stag later this year when my two year old Avons have worn out.Richard

I totally agree with mole on this one Avon are not budget tyres in fact they were fitted to some flash car from the factory Aston I believe Anyway I've always used them when I can. I had a set of ZV3's fitted a couple of years ago and they have looked after me ,unfortunately as mole says they have left the 14" market. I have just fitted 205x60 x15 ZV3's to my new wheels and I had roadrunners on my bike as well. The only unfortunate contradiction I have that the 14" have Made in England on them the new 15" have Made in C yep you have guessed it
I only hope they are as good and I wont be eating my words.

AVON tyres used to be a premium brand for Rollers and Astons but they were sold out to Cooper Tires in the USA. The Ranger ATs I fitted to my Range Rover were frankly rubbish, noisy, poor handling and eventually one of them blew out at the beaded edge - one massive brown trouser moment. The fitter I showed them to told me Budget tyre and wouldnt fit them on his Mother in Laws car!
Traditional AVON tyres may still be made to the original patterns standard and Vintage Tyres etc should be able to advise.Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

There probably all made in China by now. There are different models of Avon, now if yo go back into Blackcircles and look up ZV3's they don't do 205's but they do 195's at £64 but if they did I would recon they would be around £68-70 I don't see that as budget. As been said each to his/her own. I've raced on them run cars and bikes on them and they have always been good to me. Obviously they don't work on Chelsea Tractors but I believe different tyres work on different vehicles, and you can experience a problem with any make of tyre whatever the coast, I don't think that makes them rubbish just out of hand. Also we must remember that kerbing or bouncing up and down them causes premature failiurOriginally posted by Neil WThink you are right & as Staggard says made in China could have brought down the price into Budget spec - Blackcircles fully fitted for the equiv to ZV is
Avon ZT5 205/60 R15 H £55.93 Fully fitted price.

We've used ZV5s on the V70 and have had them crack between the treads so you could see the steel reinforcing inside. This happened at 3 years old and although Avon we're interested the on-line seller was not as they were older than 2 years.
Not sure we'll be buying Avons again or using that on-line seller again either!

nope still not with you :/Originally posted by Staggard View PostSorry my man, if you don't understand it, then I cant explain it
are you saying that the Range Rover is rubbish or that AVON make tyres that are not fit for purpose?
Or were you just trying to be controversial?

Nope Jeff I totally get it. I just got a bit fed up thinking Graham was blackcatting again. EDITED TO ADD "depression is a *******" Fine now
but for the record
I am was not born within earshot of the Bow Bells nor do I live in Lunnon, I am happy enough with the Chelsea tractor moniker because I am pretty thick skinned and all that. I don't make a habit of bumping up onto pavements and my 23 year old Range Rover spends more time on the motorway than the city centre.
I did however have a nasty experience with AVON Ranger tyres and yet my opinion was totally dismissed by Graham, I must be a cockney, twat, etc etc etc because I don't share his view that a £60 tyre is not a premium tyre even though it is in fact the 5th cheapest in the 195/60 R15 range on blackcircles. (no apology if I got your tyre size wrong Graham
)
This happened for no reason at motorway speeds I was incredibly lucky to get away with it. Fortunately because they were so rubbish on grip I had switched them from front to back prior to the event

The Facts for Graham
The tread was good, they tyre was 4 years old and there were no visible signs of any other damage to the tyre carcass. The tyre fitter told me that they were now a budget brand. When the fitter removed the other rear tyre there was cracking the inside of the tyre on the beaded edge, the rest of the unblown AVON Ranger looked perfect. The fitter was so concerned that both were sent off for further analysis I have no idea of the results as other life events somewhat took over.
I will never buy an AVON tyre again. Good luck with yours Graham
Life goes on etc back to the fun
