    New member intro

I have been a member of the forum since December 2015 and have enjoyed reading through the posts and have learnt a lot.
Finally got my Stag on 27 September, exactly one year after I first saw it, tucked away in the corner of someones car collection covered in dust.
A 1972 model in Safron Yellow with 56,000 miles on the clock, all backed up with a nice pile of past MoTs and task disks, it was last used on the road in 2002, I have a list of things to do getting it ready for the MoT.
    1) Replace brake master cylinder and all brake linings.
    2) Change oil
    3) Renew anti-freeze
    4) Sort passenger door that does not open with exterior handle
    5) Sort wipers that do not park at screen base
    6) Replace instrument lights
    7) Install rear seatbelt
    8) Install door mirrors
    9) Replace tyres, although they have had very little use at probably over 14 years old could well be past their best
Probably find other things, but looking forward to driving it on the road.

    Martin

            Looks nice, Martin, and welcome.

If you're thinking of driving your car before completing your list (and I'd want to), I'd recommend you move No 9) up to to No 2). As has been posted recently, you can check their age by the 4-digit code (first 2 digits are the week number; the second 2 being the year). If the number isn't in tis format, then they're very old. Mine had only done ~500 miles 2005 - 2014, good tread, no cracking, good in the dry, but lethal in the wet - found out they were at least 30-years old.

Enjoy what's left of the good weather.

Hi and thanks everyone for the welcome.
Yes tyres will be done before going out on the road.
Need to add door lock barrels, just discovered any key opens the drivers door!

Must be a Microsoft car. They were always telling me to press Any Key to Continue, but I could never find it on my keyboard, so I switched to Apple.....

Now, that takes me back to the 60's.

Also reminds me of my Mk2 Golf when I lived in the middle of Carlisle. A security weakness was due to a very small overlap of the door handle over the aperture in the door and mine got broken into on a regular basis - never got anything knicked as nothing of value left in the car. I fitted overlap plates (IIRC they we called "Armadillo"). A couple of nights later, a front quarterlight got smashed Law of unintended consequence

I am a great believer of leaving the car unlocked, as long as you have a good alarm fitted, on the several occasions I have had my cars broken into, the only time it has cost me money is when they are locked and the thief has damaged the door lock or smashed the window to get in .. when it has been unlocked they have just opened the door, the alarm has gone off, and they do a runner, with no damage to the car ... and opened glove box/ center console to have a quick look for something to nick before they scarper.

Yes, often thought of this, and we don't always put the hood up when we pop into a shop. Don't know how the insurers would look at this. Presume contents wouldn't be covered. I've got a Toad immobiliser fitted, so would hope that theft would still be covered.

Still trying to fathom why you would fit an immobiliser to a toad - I know they are endangered, but a fence might be a little more RSPCA friendly than restraints

As far as alarms go, I have a dual zone microwave detector in the car, this not only protects the contents with the top down, but gives a warning beep when you get within 18" of the car, letting any miscreant (or unfettered amphibian) know that the car is alarmed

Many insurance companies won't cover you if car is unlocked, worth checking.
