Tracing my cars history - confused.com

I thought that I would try and research a bit of the history for my car which according to the V5 has had three owners previous to me, but it all seems very strange.

I have the original invoice from British Leyland/Triumph Motors with a name, lets call it Mr A, and address. I have receipts for work done for Mr A, Mr B, Mr C and Mr D.

I sent off to the DVLA for a list of previous keepers details, which came back surprisingly quickly - within ten days - and the first registered keeper isn't Mr A but was actually Mr B. A separate sheet listing items accompanying the car in a folder has a customs and excise reference number and also mentions a booklet or leaflet titled "exporting your car". I know that the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner but in this case Mr A's name is on the invoice, so I guess he paid for it. I believe that the car was originally purchased for export, as Mr A did not have an English name, and it has a kph speedo. (but there is no K in the VIN number as I have seen mentioned on the stagbytriumph.co.uk website) Mileage matches with MOTs going back almost 20 years.

It all just seems a bit strange, but anyway, I intend to get a Heritage certificate which may help or not, and this brings me to my question, which is the body number? Both plates are painted on the LH front corner, one more so than the other, the heavily painted one is 12345 LD and the lightly painted one T 12335 LD, I have seen two different posts one saying the one beginning with T is the body number and another saying the T is the sales number, can someone tell me which is which please.

If you are applying for a Heritage certificate it will be the VIN number you need for the application

If name is not English - ie Spanish it would give a clue where it was exported to etc.

This was done by many in the Armed Forced in Germany as my father in law did this with 2 Ford Cortina's in the 70's when posted in RAF.

Ahhh, right, the T number is the body number then, it's just that the heritage form asks for it if you know it, as well as the VIN and registration etc.
