why not helicoil? shed load cheaper, easier to install and probably in most cases just as effective?

I know time serts are dearer, but not sure if heli coils would be strongh enough to hold when bolting a head down

            Thanks dave

Helicoils are approved for use in the aircraft industry. I'm sure they would be OK in a Stag engine. Quality helical inserts are stainless steel. They will take a huge loading in cast iron. No, I don't have the proof to hand, but they will easily take 65ft-lb in that application.

I can recommend helicoil for rover v8 head bolt threads, done a few myself. I thought I read something that timesert would require block to be refaced though that could be a load of bollocks.

I wondered if the price for the sert inserts included the pope to fly in and bless my work

do you have you a knackered thread in a stag block or rover block? dead thread on my stag block needed engineering work but then that was for a stud hole.

its a triumph block, when fitting the time sert,in the kit there's a counter sink cutter,so when the time sert is fitted its flush with the block

really im a bit confused, about time serts and heil coils, but when talking to a couple of the suppliers they recommended i use time sert for my thread problem, but why do people fit time serts for the spark plug repairs, in steed of heli coils

Because Time-Serts are 'top hat-shaped' and have a rim that sits against the top face of the thread. That prevents them screwing into the head cavity which, in theory, a Helicoil could do. You are looking at replacing a damaged thread in the block, which is a blind hole. A Helicoil cannot disappear into the hole. As you say, with a Time-Sert you need to countersink the rim of the hole to accommodate the lip of the insert. I would be using Helicoils in your situation.

Heli-coils are fine for every thing except spark plug tappings. Heli-coils have been known to wind into the cylinder Time-Serts cannot and worth the extra expence in this case. When the heads were off my engine I Helli-coiled every thing in aluminium I could reach. The sparkplugs were Time-Serted. Just my spin on the subject.
