    Shaft hardening

I am having my crankshaft reground - should it be re-hardened afterwards, and what does this involve?
It has also been suggested that I replace my conrods with new ones - is this really necessary?
All advice much appreciated as always from you knowledgeable people.

Yes mate - good move..... just ask them to Nitride it after grinding - they will either do it on site or have a handy place to get it done. Nitriding is a heat treatment that involves a bath in ammonia and/or other chemical saltswhich converts the first few microns of the surface by making them nitrogen rich. The beauty of this process is it is not only very tough, but it is dimensionally stable - after the process the crankshaft is still the same size, and can also still be polished

I had a complete oil pressure failure with a Sprint in the early hours of the morning on the A23 and had to drive for 2 miles with zero oil pressure (stone through the oil cooler) to get to a garage. after bypassing the cooler and filling with oil the oil pressure returned to where it was before.... nitrided crank and lead-indium bearing shells - the cat's knackers!

Just have your conrods checked for twist and cracks, and the eye for ovality - no need to change unless they are b*ggered

      Russ,

Is that the same as the process known as 'Tuftriding'? I had a Stag engine rebuilt in 1992 and I still have the bill somewhere for having this done by Oselli. That crank was still fine when the engine had to be stripped again 40,000 miles later for a bore problem.

        Hi Russ,

Thanks for your reply - good honest advice as always :dude:

When someone says to me 'You better put new conrods in' at £30 a time:shock:, I want to know if is really necessary. If it was going to be detrimental to the new engine rebuild then I would not hesitate, but do need to try and keep control of the costs.

The very same - it's a very worthwhile thing to have done to your crank
