Gearbox Number

Hi all,
can anyone provide me with any info about the serial number on my gearbox. I know the serial number should start with LD or LE. The gearbox number on my car looks like 3 L 75.(see picture) The overdrive number is 25/115837/006168. Perhaps the overdrive number can help. The commission number on my car is LD40997O and the engine number is LF40923HE. I have looked up various sites and can't find anything about such kind of gearbox number.

Is it a 75 car?? Mine has "D4C 71" just above the serial number and is a 71 gearbox judging by the number.

According to the commission number it is a 76 car. The date of registration is 26/05/76, but.........

Wolfgang, I rather feel that you are looking at some casting number rather than a true gearbox serial number. Are you sure there are no other stamped numbers you can see?

I have made another picture under the car. According to the repair manual the manual gearboxes have the serial number stamped on the left side of the clutch housing. I can't see any other number there.

Wolfgang. I think you will find that the gearbox number is stamped into the clutch bell housing casting where the clutch cross shaft is supported. I'm afraid I can't remember which side though!

I was looking at photos of my gearbox yesterday and also that flat machined part which I think Mike refers to. There is no number there on the left side, but I don't have any photos of the right side, so look there Wolfgang.

By the way, don't rely blindly on the "official" manuals, they have the odd error in several areas!

Today I made some pictures under the car again. The only stamped number I can find is the "3 L 75" mentioned above. Perhaps I am still not looking at the right place?

If I remember correctly - and it's the same as the big saloons - the number should be stamped on the back of the left hand boss where the clutch cross shaft goes through. This seems to be visible on your picture number 3, albeit rotated down by 90 degrees!

On the big saloons, this is the same side as the lever to the clutch slave but the other side on the Stag (the Stag has the slave cylinder on the right hand side, saloons on the left!).

Mike, that's exactly what I thought. You can see the left hand boss on the picture in my posting dated 25/10/16. The number there is "3 L 75" ??

and its similar to my very early gearbox, note that the year is also stamped there..

Seems that you are in the right place but its just not there?? They must have been on a tea break!
