    Hardtop storage in garage roof

After almost selling my hardtop as I don't think I'll ever use it I've decided to keep it but have the age old problem of where to store it. I've seen numerous ways of storing it in the roof of the garage with winches and even using a roof rack to attach it to but I don't think I've seen a solution in a garage where the roof is supported by A-frame roof trusses which gives less head height. Any ideas ?

If you can't get it in the roof as it is because of trusses, why not ask a builder if the trusses can be altered by additional members stressing and affixing onto others or flying buttress fitment to the walls for additional supports to allow you to cut any trusses in the way to get the hardtop up ?
It doesn't have to disappear up into the roof, just 6" clearance over the bottom of the hoist hardtop over the top of the windscreen frame will do.

Wear a hard hat for the hard top - simples.

The first question is how is the roof constructed? - pre-formed trusses or a cut- roof.

You can't just cut and adapt pre-formed trusses in the same way that you can with a cut- roof made on site from individual timbers. So if your roof is made of trusses (as mine is) you will need to leave as is and have the hardtop as high as that makes possible and live with the risk of bumping your head - depending on how tall you are and the height of the truss of course.

If it is a cut- roof then it can be adapted to raise the joists and you should speak to a structural engineer to re-design it, or a builder / carpenter if you are prepared to take a bit of a risk in the solution.

At 6'2" I do need a bit of clearance but where there is no sense there is no feeling The trusses see pre- formed so I'm going to struggle - perhaps it's back to plan A and head rules the heart and sell the hardtop.

My hard top is supported from the garage roof. My garage roof is really low. Bottom of the hard top is about a foot above the car. I have to remember to duck. I have the scar on my head as a reminder

Hi Scotty, Mine is suspended from the roof and sits about 600 mm above the bonnet when parked. having said that it has only been back on the car once in 25 years for a weekend but I would not ever sell it. It will go with the car after I have shuffled on.
                  Cheers Ian A

StagStan & Ian - how have you got the hardtop suspended ? Any pictures would be really useful and appreciated.
                    cheers

I have mine hanging on a 12v winch fixed to the roofbeam. Easy on and off.

I put roof bars on mine, supported it and with the help of a friend, pulled it up into position using ratchet straps. I thought that was a smart idea and would be easy to lower but the damned straps twisted as they tightened got uneven and we couldn't really get it level. I think it will be a case of cutting them off IF I ever feel the need to fit it.

Doesn't this in my reply in # 2 cover these items ?

Not really Micky. You said to ask a builder if they can be altered, and I was expanding on that by providing guidance on the two possibilities and adding the professional advice that if they are pre-formed then they can't be altered.

Does it matter if we both gave similar info though?
