Hi chaps, quick one how long does antifreeze coolant last in a sealed unopened can, does it loose its inhibitors even if it is unopened. I think it's about four years old. Also cancelled order from unipart, where would the best and cheapest play to get coolant. Many thanks Steve

I can't help with regard to shelf life, other than to say that I should think it would be OK as long as it was sealed. But you don't state what type of anti-freeze it is. The data sheet for the product may tell you. These are usually available online.
If you 'Google' "does anti-freeze have a shelf life?" there is plenty of advice there that seems to indicate it has a very long shelf life if sealed.
If you want to buy more, then I would be happy with this: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/ca...0471&0&cc5_865. Buy using Code WEEKEND30 and get 30% discount off the website price.Last edited by DJT; 9 December 2016, 18:36.Dave

Jeff the anti freeze is still in its original container, i.e. undiluted. a hydrometer is used to give an indication of the concentation and hence the ldvel of protection against freezing. so in my opinion a useless test in this instance.Originally posted by Jeff View PostUse a Hydrometer if not sure as they do in garages to test the anti freeze level.
I would have thought a greater concern would be to know if the corrosion inhibitors had deteriorated.
For what its worth I am reasonably sure it will be ok.

The clue is in the name.

Think you need to check your facts - a hydrometer is used to measure the relative density of a liquid - relative to water which is "1" hence it being called a hydrometer.
It does not need water to work, water is the measure to compare against
Edit - example
The term "relative density" means the same as "specific gravity." It is a measure of how dense one thing is when compared to a given reference. The reference is usually water. With respect to water, the relative density of mercury is 13.56 because it is 13.56 times as dense as water.
No water? Still workeeLast edited by GDPR; 9 December 2016, 23:36.

Yes it will still give a reading, but what will it mean? Please explain how the use of a hydrometer will tell the op if his undiluted, unopened container of antifreeze is any good and if the corrosion inhibitors are still good.Originally posted by kryten View PostThink you need to check your facts - a hydrometer is used to measure the relative density of a liquid - relative to water which is "1" hence it being called a hydrometer.

Steve, bin it if you are not sure or as I said go to a local garage and they will give their expert opinion, it isn't that expensive to replace then you will have peace of mind, if in doubt.....bin it.

Kryten,
Let me assure you I know my facts far better than you ever did. I know about S.G. and I also know where the word 'Hydro' comes from. Yes, all liquids have an S.G. measured against Water, where that has an S.G. of 1, and if you'd like to know, 1 litre of pure Water weighs exactly 1Kg at +15C too.
Any S.G. reading taken of Anti-Freeze on it's own (no Water included) is totally and utterly pointless, all it will give you is the S.G. of the Anti-Freeze against that of pure Water. Unless you know exactly what the S.G. of a given make or type of Anti-Freeze should be, you cannot use a Hydrometer to judge if it's S.G. is the same as the day it was put in the can. Hence - 'No Water, no workee'.
The reason a Hydrometer is used is to check the ratio of Water to Anti-Freeze present in your cooling system, i.e. if your Coolant has an S.G. of 1, you have a problem with the Anti-Freeze content as it has none at all.
I've only chosen to respond to this nonsense to illustrate that your little band of buddies are well capable of talking absolute rubbish, something constantly claimed by the likes of people that use this forum just to spoil for a fight. In instances like this it's just too ironic not to comment on. Even more ironic are the recent quotes of 'a little knowledge is dangerous', and the absolute jewel in the crown, 'people who have forgotten more than they ever knew'.
I would suggest that someone having forgotten more than ever knew is in a very difficult position indeed.
Merry Christmas

Further edit: I'm wondering who will tell me mercury has water in it to try and do me down, as is the current vogue/sport

Many of us are tired of your little regime and it's time it ended. I think it would be better for you to resign from the post of Moderator forthwith, so that the practice of acting as Chief Whip with the other Mod.s might end. Perhaps then, the disruptive element that causes so much friction on this forum will lose their buddy protection. Some of the behaviour on here is frankly intolerable and without such favour they'd have been thrown off long ago.
Long live the revolution.
