    Hard Top

I will admit to not doing much of a search but how available and what would be a “normal” price for a Hard Top for a Stag. Reason for asking my search to-day found a potential purchase but with no Hard Top. I would not be to worried about the condition as long as not in to poor a condition. Also was there someone who made a Hard Top in fibre glass although I suspect if there is such a thing it would be “Silly” money.

    Many thanks, Don Kennedy.

    HI Don

A mint spotless hard top will set you back at least £1000 if not more. A goodone will cost around £500 and a rough one will be around £150-250 but will need work.

I had mine resprayed recently this cost £350 approx ( Total job bonnet, boot lid,HT and front panel) as the whole job cost £1100.

Hardtops are worth ever penny as they make the car into a GT and realistic for all year round motoring.

Fiberglass tops are available but seem to be rare, Rimmer Bros were selling them until recently.

They are very heavy though - 2 man job to get it on and off - so far mine has lived in the shed!

Depends if you use it through the winter I suppose. Very civilised with it on.

        Hi Don,

There are some, me and Stuart included, who use the hardtop regularly in Winter and others who can't be bothered, don't see the point, or physically cannot get one on/off or store one.

This is the problem. They are damned heavy and large. Too much for one person to handle unless you have some means of lifting it mechanically, or are built like Schwartzenegger.

There was the Lenham GRP hard top, which Rimmers Bros bought the moulds for. But I haven't seen many available second hand and RB haven't made them for years. Although lighter, I believe the side windows are fixed on the Lenham. May be wrong there.

Steel hard tops come up for sale frequently, but rust-free ones fetch good money. Rusty ones are tricky to repair - read 'expensive' if you have to pay to get one repaired professionally - as they can go along the front edge, and anywhere along the lower edge from the b-post catches rearwards.

Don't let it stop you from buying a good Stag. Just factor this into the price and bide your time until one comes along. I am still undecided as to whether to sell my fairly good spare Carmine Mk2top or do it up and then sellthe black Mk1 topthat I rebuilt a few years ago and which is currently on my car. :?

I have seen plenty of usable ones go for £200-300, if you want something in really excellent conditions it will cost more.

As already mentioned they are heavy - i didn'tput mine on last year, used the car throughout winter with the soft top which, in many cases is more watertight than the hardtop. Only down-side is that the visibility is obviously reduced without the extra glass.

I bought a hardtop for my car this year for £50 !

Not in perfect condition but sound apart from one or two trims missing. I have managed to get all the trims required from Rimmers £150 but there aren't many left. The problem I am havind is in fitting the trims onto the clips but I am sure there must be an easy way. So there are bargains about.

              Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the replies. Looks like the Hard Top not a problem. I will have to see if the StagI buy has one. Condition not to important ( as long as not to bad ) as I have a friend with a body work / repair business. ( not what you know, it's who you know ). I do not want to have to do major bodywork / paint stuff again, the last Car was so much "Fun" doing the body / paint stuff. If interested have a look at,

Nearly has a picture of me so take care no one delicate is looking, I am the one with the mask in the yard, scarry.

Off today loking at another Stag. I will find my Car.

              Many thanks, Don Kennedy.
