    Electrical question

    Firstly, Merry Christmas all!

Right, I am hoping to a bit of work to the old girl over the Christmas period. One of the jobs is to sort out a gps tracker install, and also I am looking to install wiring for rear cubby speakers and an underseat sub as well (they are yet to be purchased yet, but I think I 'need' them!). Given the GPS unit needs a permanent power source, and also I would like to run a dedicated power source to a powered sub, I am wondering where to take this power from?

Does anyone know if there are any suitable spare/unused power supplies at the fusebox/elsewhere in the car? If not, is there a power supply I can take from there and run for the gps and sub (probably through separate fuses). I cannot imagine the gps unit will draw that much, but suspect the sub could...

Has anyone done similar installs/modifications who could give me a few pointers here please? I obviously want to avoid overloading any existing circuits.

    Thanks
    Mark

Personally I have run a relay switched fused supply to a separate fusebox to do this sort of thing - you just need to leave a couple unswitched, but have a 30amp fuse where it leaves the battery to deal with pre fusebox wiring

Suggest the sub is connected to an Ignition feed. On the fusebox (unmodified Mk2 at least) there's a spare Lucar blade on Fuse 2 (Terminal 4 - existing 1 x green wire connected). Suggest you include a lower value fuse in the Sub feed (say 5A). Either disconnect the battery, or at least ensure ignition is off before doing this.

For a Battery Supply Feed for your GPS tracker, you could connect an inline fuse to a spare Lucar blade on the battery side of Fuse 1 (Terminal 1 - existing Brown wire connected. Make sure battery is disconnected before doing this one.

I'm planning on fitting a supplementary fusebox like this http://www.autosparks.co.uk/electric...ear-entry.html . Probably using 2 of the 6 ways for Battery feed, with the other 4 for Ignition controlled circuits. I reckon this can be easily located in the back of the glovebox - may need some heatshrink to insulate exposed bits of the blades as all kinds of stuff gets thrown into the glovebox.
