Crankshaft polish/regrind and cylinder head refurbishment

Hi,

I have stripped my Stag down for total rebuild, the headache I have is the engine, whilst it was running OK before the rebuild I have no idea of the history, I now have it out on an engine stand so am thinking it may well be worth rebuilding rather than refitting and finding problems later, I can rebuild it myself, I have not rebuilt a Stag engine I have done several other cars and can see not reason why this should be a problem, I would like to have the crankshaft checked and possibly reground or polished, I would also like to have the cylinder heads checked, also to find out if they valve seats have been upgraded to take unleaded fuel. Does anyone know of a good place I could take/send them for checking? I live in Kent near Canterbury but would be happy to courier if needed.

Good luck in getting the heads off. They are aluminium, so will already have hard valve seat inserts fitted. You need to check the exhaust valves. If they are original and have the number 155524VL etched near the top of the stem, then they too are suitable for unleaded and don't need replacing. So far I have completed approx 90,000 miles in two Stags all on unleaded fuel and no additives. The only failure being cheap exhaust valves fitted by a well known parts supplier to an exchange head back in 1992, and which burnt out within 20,000 miles.

Try a search for head removal, (don't do this when you are near a knife draw or under ropes draped over overhead rafters lol).

There is lots of experience on this forum and plenty of help can be given if you are unfortunate to have problems removing yours, with luck they will slide up the studs and in an hour you will be inspecting them on the garage floor.

They did some work on my porsche engine. Very easy to work with and Gary was happy to do whatever work I wanted and leave the rest to me.

There is a real old fashioned engineering firm called Hartley Engineering in Blean near canterbury, they used to do up stag engines and export them. they did my spitfire engine years ago and it ran perfectly for 9 years as my main car until i sold it. I used then to do the heads on my stag 3 years ago. I can recommend them if you want somewhere local.
