Starting a rebuilt motor & box

    Hi all,

I will shortly be starting a fully rebuilt motor & manual box. Other than letting the engine spin over for a while to get the oil worked around the motor, is there anything else I should consider please?

    As always, thanks in advance

    regards

Take a video of it - you'll relish the sound (assuming it starts of course!

I spun the oil pump using a hex shaft and an electric drill in reverse to get the oil around the engine before first start-up. (Needs distributor removed, but is simple.)

I concur with Drew here - I do this on all motors that I build for peace of mind, I use a 1/4" drive 5/16" socket on an extension in the cordless drill and use the existing pump quill shaft, but make sure you tape the 5/16" socket onto the extension bar so it doesn't accidentally get flicked off and it heads into the sump....guess how I know...

Before you try to start it, torque the heads!
And do it again after an hour's running, and after 500 miles, and after 1000 miles.
            And once more for luck.

At least in the DIY stores here, those stirring thingummies for mixing paint, tile grout etc., have long hexagon shafts which have the exact dimensions of the Stag pump drive shaft. Just chop of the stirrer bit.
