    Gearbox nose extension

    Gents,

Having stripped my motor out to change it, i notice it has a short gearbox nose. I'm trying to put a hold on the outlay as it's just keeping on going (doubt any of you have experienced that......not). The clutch operation has been fine apart from a rattle as you gently take up the slack on the clutch. £50 for an extension is a bit salty right now but i don't want to miss an opportunity to make a valid improvement. Does anyone recommend I make the swap please?

    Cheers

I think you have been lucky to have a workable clutch with the short nose (50mm?), and I doubt if you will find any second hand long (80mm) ones now as they have all been grabbed! Rimmers are offering used ones cheaply, but they may be the same as you have got already.
If you are only replacing the bearing, you might be ok leaving the short one there, but if you are going to replace the clutch plate I think the longer one, even at £50 would be advisable. It is when the bearing carrier is at full travel to disengage a new clutch, that problems usually occur.
Use a good heat resistant grease on the extension, and make sure you get those two bell housing dowel bolts back where they belong.
No doubt you will get other suggestions.
    Mike.

Ah ha! That's interesting Mike, I was under the impression they are 4 1/2" long from somewhere or other. Mine is 3 1/2" so I may well be talking with my flies undone here!

      I'll check with a supplier.

Thanks very much for the reply!!

We had both better check if anything is undone. The measurements I gave are for just the tubular part of the extension, which the bearing carrier slides over.

Ah, thanks Mike. Paddocks said there's is 4 1/4" long so this must be the overall length. I'll try and het more clarity

            Regards

I got a complete long nose set up from Martin at justriumph:

The bearing carrier length is identical to the standard carrier (81,2mm)

The overall nose length from base of casting to tip of shaft is 107,3mm

The long nose "sliding shaft" length is 80mm (standard shaft 51mm)
I'm afraid you'll have to do the conversion into chains, links, rods, poles and perches
              The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

the gearbox nose extension can be very easily modified to longer length by welding a machined tube to he existing without any issue ,much cheaper than paying stupid money for the rare extra long nose pieces

I don't have issues with the short noses - been asked to fit the long ones but can't say I've had issues with short noses when just asked to do a clutch
