Ah...yes found the first problem ..NO thermostat fitted

Just bought a fancy chrome plated thermostat housing and so removed the original...NO thermostat fitted..
Seeing as the car works a treat, what is the reason for this?
    Cheers

Possibly a blockage somewhere in your cooling system which coincidentally slows the water enough to allow correct cooling ? Don't agonise on it fit the correct thermostat and bleed off the air and see how the car is then.

If your car is a MK2 no thermostat can have the effect of making it run hotter. The Mk2 thermostats have a 'foot' which closes the bypass circuit when the coolant gets hotter. before the foot closes the coolant takes a short cut thru the bypass directly back to the pump. The pressure drop across the rad will always mean the pump will favour the more direct coolant from the Bypass circuit.
I would definitely put the correct MK2 thermostat back- Alan

Right then thanks for the advice I have ordered a thermostat avec jiggle pin and removed the new no-jiggle pin variety I have refitted the housing sans thermostat and refilled and bled...Now then it took a mind boggling amount of water/coolant probably 5 lts +
My drive is on a slope so I reversed the car in making the rad the highest point and refilled everything fine again...it runs cool but it runs and the heater works hope I've not done any damage.I didn't let it go to MAX on the gauge and was only testing it driving in circles round our estate. I shall report back when the new thermostat is fitted.

Just drill a hole in the flange of the "non jiggled" 'stat - 2 to 3mm will do it, then it will bleed properly.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.
