Big Breather Pipe 90 degree 12/2" or so under air filter Housing ?

Hello been fiddling again...I must say its obvious that I live not a million miles from where all the Manchester footie players live..in the poor semi-detached region I might add as my Engine bay is assuming "Footballers Wives post tasteless"..oh yes almost 1970's Tarts Boudoir in its stylish elan...a lot of chrome...too much...But as Dave Lee Roth (He of "Van Halen"..popular 1980's beat combo)once said ..."If all the Worlds a stage...then...I want more light"!
Anyway...I removed the air-filter housing and underneath is a hefty pipe not that long with a 90 degree bend in it...should anything fit in the end of it or does it just dangle as it were?
    Many thanks
Again accept apologies if its an inane question

Fitted one trouble bleeding, removed and replaced ...nothing in the housing and the car works perfectly...maybe the heater could be hotter? So this AM new thermostat arrives so as soon as I get a moment...looking after Grand-Children at the mo..( how did that happen) I shall report back

The hefty rubber elbow should have a flexible air hose pushed in to it, the other end of which should fit over the circular outlet on top of the exhaust manifold shield on the near side head. Yours may be missing, in which case you could forget the whole thing, or see if you can buy used shield. If you have a Mk 1 manifold, which doesn't have the necessary threaded holes to bolt the shield in place, it will mean more expense.
The purpose of it is to draw cold air over the manifold to heat it before it gets to the carburettors. This helps with fuel vapourisation and prevents icing of the jets in very cold conditions. If the valve under the inlet to the air filter box is working properly, it will sense when the air is warm, and close off the feed from the hose, and only allow air in from the duct on the top of the radiator.
        Mike.
