Can I helicoil the engine block for a head stud?

    So,
Had to use the rope trick to lift the head an inch so as to saw through one stud on the left head. Rearmost stud.
I hoped the stub of the stud would easily unscrew from the block but its tight.
Wouldn't shift with my newly purchased sealy impact stud extractor. Now it is quite chewed up and the extractor slips off.
I am hoping to drill out the stud carefully and perhaps that will ease the stud without damaging the thread but if I do have to drill out the threads, is there enough meat round the hole to fit a helicoil (recoil) insert?

    Hi David,
Mine needed cutting off,but I was able to weld a substantial nut on to the stud to remove it.Others did come out with an extractor(you need the right size hole for the extractor to be a tight fit)a little heat might help also.
I don't see why you couldn't fit a helicoil or similar, but I'm surprised no one has answered yet.
    Good luck,Ken.

      Thanks Ken.
Welding a nut on is a good idea. I might try that tomorrow. Not only will i get a good grip with a socket but also the heat might help.

I am worried about helicoils as i don't want to break into a water or oil gallery.

You can always try induction as well. Might even be one for rent, I just don't know.

If it is a piece of stud in the block you should be able to get it out using the welded nut but if not then drill it using a small (new) drill first and increasing the size. Steady hand required.

Can't see why you would need to consider a helicoil in the block unless I'm missing something?

Give it a lot of PlusGas as well or any other effective release agent. A lot of heat always helps to get rid of the the years of corrosion. One advantage of a Cast Iron block it can take more heat than an aluminium Alloy one.

It depending how hard the stud is is if its a good idea to try to drill it out, i know easyouts always seem to break. And the stud gets shorter and shorter.

              Hurray,

After three attempts at welding a drilled out M12 nut on to the very short stub of a stud it has worked. I have to say I was loosing heart but now I am happy again!.
Thanks everyone for your comments and ideas. It's great to have people on your side when you need it.
I have some other issues but I'll start new threads for them.

Well done , must be a great relief . While you have the heads off make sure your machine shop checks all the other threads for damage especially the inlet manifold threads . I trusted the machine shop and didn't check mine and had to do them on the car . Las son learnt.

That's great,I remember that feeling once all the studs were out,,hopefully plain sailing from now on.

New threads - but no helicoils :-)
