Tax Exempt ( Maybe ). I live in hope.

I think I know the answer so sorry for asking but I live in hope a Stag I could buy maybe Tax Exempt. The information on the DVLA web site shows first registered 05/04/1973. Chassis/Commission number LD22226D. The information I have is any number before LD21086 is definitely Tax Exempt, Numbers between LD21087 and LD21100 could be Tax Exempt. Could the number LD22226D be proved to be built before 31/12/72.

    Many thanks, Don Kennedy

    Hi Don,

I think the only way is to get a BMIHT certificate that shows the build date.

The problem with this is it could get expensive if you don't buy the car. From information given on the SOC website and James Taylor's 'bible', I think it is better to assume that anything after LD21087 won't be tax exempt.

Having had the benefit of 'free' tax on my last Stag for 11 years I know how satisfying it is to get something for nothing. However, it is only £185 per year, which is a small percentage of the purchase price, especially if you have to spend money bringing a tax exempt Stag up to the standard of a good newer car at similar price.

Buy on condition (combined with gut feeling) rather than the cost of the tax disc.

      Hi Dave,

Many thanks for the reply. I have been spoilt by already having a Car that is Tax exempt. Having to pay pay the road tax would not put me off buying the right Stag and maybe this one is the Stag for me. Looking at it next Saturday ( I hope ).

          Hi Dave,

          The Stag is in Liskeard.

Fingers crossed it is what I am looking for as there area few Stagsthat also look interesting but one is in Bristolone is inBimingham and another near Portsmouthso nice if I could find one local to save traveling. If you do hear of one for sale localy it would be appreciated if you would let me know. I looked at three last weekend, two were real dogs and one had potential but I was concerned about what looked like corrosion at the bottom of the door "A" pillar to sill area. Not ruled out that one yet. I have a feeling you know the car, its in Newton Abbott, White, owner Colin.
