    Fuel Tank Query

    Hi chaps,

I'm trying to find the source of the petrol smell in the boot and have located a pipe coming out of the top of the tank next to the "tank to filler" breather pipe, in the well.
This metal pipe, no more than 2" long, has an equally short piece of rubber pipe attached and someone has bunged the end with a bolt!! This clearly doesn't look correct and certainly isn't vapour tight.
I can find no reference to it, visually or in text, in the WM but have noticed it (I think) in the Rimmers catalogue, though with no part reference. (lower drawing, page 37).

Can anyone tell me what it's for and how it should be terminated or connected?

    As usual, thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Brian

I have the same on mine, it's not used on the Stag, it's a legacy of Triumph using the Triumph 2500 tank in the Stag.

It should be blocked off with something that will resist fuel containing ethanol. On mine the PO had used white bathroom sealer, which lasted the time it took to sell me the car and drive it home .

I'll leave it others to tell you what pipes are for what, but when I had a petrol smell in the boot it turned out that the Tank itself that was dripping fuel underneath. Worthwhile taking the Tank out and checking the underneath of yours, after disconnecting the pipes there are just 4 nuts to undo and you can lift it out, not a difficult job.

It's the fuel return pipe when used on 2.5pi. The correct sized bolt can be screwed into the rubber pipe stub and clamped with a hose clip. Ideally you need R9 grade fuel hose to protect against ethanol. Extremely common problem.

Thanks everyone, good response as always.
There's a couple of things I'll do before removing the tank and approach it on a "process of elimination" basis. At the moment this pipe seems a likely candidate.

Nothing disregarded, though my hip pocket is bulging somewhat!!
