Hello ,I am having trouble getting the nearside head off I have tried rope trick, heat, jacking off the block but nothing moved, 4 of the 5 studs have snapped at head level which hasn't helped if anyone has any other ideas please help as I am quite literally stuck ! I did see a jig on the internet that bolted to the cam housing and exhaust manifold bolts then jacked straight off the studs which may work if I can find one.

Hi Alan,
That does sound a bit desperate for sure. I take it you have tried pushing it off with a strong bottle jack (I used a 12-tonne version which just about fit between the heads using L-brackets bolted to both heads)? If not bolt the lose head back on and give it a go and hopefully it'll break the seal so you can push the head up the studs a bit.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Joakim

Yes I did try jacking but ended up threading the inlet manifold bolt holes, now I have a 7/8" square bar into the two inner inlet ports and have tried jacking from there but it still wont budge.Originally posted by jagorstag View PostHi Alan,

Some have successfully used an air chisel to break the corrosion welds. About 30s of 3000blows/ minute per stud seems to be the going rate. The idea is that the shockwave passes down the stud causing a small differential movement, when the shockwave gets to the block some of the energy is reflected, again causing movement, after about 1500 or so impacts the corrosion is sufficiently broken to allow some movement.
I'm planning to remove the heads on my engine and will probably use this technique before resorting to the jacks, I'm thinking about plasticine bunds round each stud/bolt to contain a pool of penetrating oil for a couple of days first.LD334, Royal Blue, TV8, BW35.
When all else fails, read the instructions.
