    Speedo inner cable

Hello all. Do you ever start a job and wish you hadn't! My speedo has recently been making a loud ticking noise and the needle had started bouncing, so I removed the inner speedo cable from the speedo end, to lubricate it, using spray grease. The inner cable came out easily and looked in reasonably good condition. My problems started when I came to reinsert it. I can't seem to get the gearbox square end to relocate. I gather that if you can turn the cable, it hasn't engaged. I've tried turning and pushing it but to no avail. I'd be grateful if anyone could give me some pointers please. If I have to disconnect the outer cable at the gearbox end, to push the inner cable in, how easy is it to get to? It's a BW35 gearbox. Any help will be much appreciated.

If it's the same as mine (BW35 in a 2000) you'll probably need to take the angle drive out of the gearbox then disconnect the cable from that. The angle drive comes out quite easily - one 7/16 bolt IIRC - and not too bad to go back in with a bit of wiggling.

    Good luck with it.

      Carlton.
Speedo angle drives on Stags are only fitted to manual/overdrive cars. Automatic 35 and 65 boxes don't have them.
If you release the outer cable from the gearbox, then push the inner right through from the speedo end, and screw the cable back on to keep the inner in place, it will be a simpler job to fit the inner back into the drive at the gearbox end.
I am staying with friends in Builth this coming weekend. The light car section of the VSCC are having their annual Welsh Trial based at the Metropole in Llandrindod, and as friends are competing, we will be there to give them encouragement. The hotel car park will be well worth the visit if you want to see some real oddities!
      Mike.

Thanks Mike. I'll have a go at it next week, if it stops raining! You're more than welcome to pop in for a cuppa next weekend but I understand if you want to spend the time you have here with your friends. Just let me know and I'll pm you my address. Hope you have a good time here in sunny Builth!

Carlton. Thanks for the invitation. Unfortunately I won't be in the Stag this time, but almost certainly the next. Please pm the address for future reference.
            Please stop it raining.
            Mike.

Sorry for the misinformation Carlton. I assumed that the Stag and 2000 would be the same.

No worries. I would have thought they'd be the same but I guess the cables must route through the two cars differently.

Thanks to all that gave me advice. Yesterday, I managed to disconnect the speedo cable from the gearbox end, feed the inner cable back in and reattach the outer cable (a bit fiddly, as the exhaust is in the way). Went for a drive this afternoon and the speedo worked like a charm. No ticking noise and no bouncy needle!
