Gearbox Filler Plug – Variation on a Theme

I know a few of us have made a minor mod to the transmission tunnel to get access to the wretched manual gearbox filler plug, so inspired by other’s efforts – including Julian’s useful pictures from a few years back - I’ve taken the approach of cutting a separate hole in the transmission tunnel in line with the filler plug - I’ve gone for a circular-ish hole 1 Ľ” diameter as I had a spare grommet that size.

With an 8 point 7/16” socket (thanks to whoever here recommended that) and a few squirts of the holy water (PlusGas) I got the plug out with too much aggro and was rewarded with a stream of oil – so, after all that it seems all was well. Ah well, at least that’s one less Stag paranoia I have to carry around! Guess I could even push the boat out now and drain/change the oil. I have to say, though, hats off to those who manage it all from below!

Now, about getting to that breather hole …

    Cheers,

I got an adjustable socket from Amazon, worked a treat, it a socket with small rods in it and they depress to the shape of the square nit, brilliant 👌👌

I have braised a UNF on to the square head of the original plug. Ratchet ring now does the job easily.

I don't like the idea of moving the 50 year old carpet and it's brittle backing to get to the plug that way. I use 8 sided sockets and have a manually operated fluid pump. the pump come handy for the diff too.

I fill mine from the top using a piece of plastic tubing the same diameter as the filler hole running from a funnel held in place by the windscreen motor. I only need to get under the car to undo/replace the plug but filling in this way is very easy.

I do exactly the same, very easy.

The gator grip looks like a good solution to the square filler plug nut, but if you want a dedicated socket this fits https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
