Strange "chuffing" sound from the back of the engine

Most obvious on start-up I thought it was an exhaust problem but I cant find a leak almost sounds like its coming from the auto box?
I've seen the odd bit of smoke along with the chuffing but not much as I say just like a leak in the manifold but I cant detect one.
any help much appreciated.

Check the spark plug seals on cyls 7 & 8.
