    Brake Squeal

    Hi chaps,

When I overhauled the front suspension I took the opportunity to replace the brake pads, ever since they have squealed.
Thinking they would "bed in" I wasn't too concerned but that doesn't seem to be happening. If I arrive at the ESM like this I'll be asked to move to another hotel!
Anyway, I've looked at some previous posts on the subject and I think I've done what "those in the know" had suggested but I'm wondering if the amount of copper grease applied is important. If not any other suggestions as to a cure?
It seems to be heat/use related, as it gets worse further into a trip. In fact at first it isn't evident at all.

    Thanks in advance,

    Brian

When I was a mechanic I was taught to lightly grind off the paint on the edges of the pads that came into contact with the caliper and be generous with the copper grease on those edges, and also to be generous and cover the back of the pads too ..

Never had a problem with car's coming back with squeaking brakes.

You could try anti squeal shims ,I have used them with fairly good results on MGB's

Thanks Kev, I'll look into that but I don't recall any paint on the pads.

Thanks also Lambrettlad, I have those fitted.

I can see me putting the old ones back on, they weren't that bad.

        Thanks again chaps.

        Regards,

        Brian

one thing that worked well !!
I wire brushed the channels where the pads fit in between the disc and the calliper ,gave them a really good clean to remove any high spots that stopped the pads from sitting 100% flat,+ shims + grease
          good luck

The metal of the pads are usually coated with paint, usually black, never seen unpainted pads before, and agree with lambrettlad about cleaning the channels

I have a 2016 Mercedes which has the same problem. The garage has inspected it and there is no technical bulletin on the problem so they have ordered 2 new front callipers which they tell me will be fitted with new pads. So 40 years on they still haven't totally cracked the problem. Good luck.

                  Brake squeal, what brake squeal?

Took the OS wheel off, removed the pads tweaked the shim clips and was more generous with the copper grease. Took it for a spin and voilà, not a sound.
                  I'll do the NS tomorrow.
You guys are great, drinks all round!!

                  Regards,
