I am not an expert but mine is having the 44 year old distributor replaced now. It might be better to get yours refurbished by someione who uses quality parts. The refurbished one I bought had problems with the points and vacuum advance according to my garage when he put it on his test bench (he says due to them using cheap parts) but he will be fitting Lumenition electronic ignition which will bypass the problems.

I have a '77 stag, it was twin point till it gave up and left me stranded with a call out to the AA mainly because I'd flattened the battery trying to restart. To remedy this problem I fitted a 'Powerspark' electronic ignition kit and haven't looked back. The tick over is smooth and acceleration much improved. The cost was about £39 and fitting was simple. That was over a year ago. I have since bought a spare unit just in case but other members have been using this system for much longer than me with no problems. After market electronic ignition sometimes does have a bad reputation for reliability but mine seems OK (at the moment). If you really want to splash the cash there is a distributor unit called a 123 distributor on the market, check the web?
