New Stag

Just purchased my second stag. (yes mŷ second) a white one and it's a dimond in the rough. My wife can't understand why I want two but as one is undergoing major repairs this will allow me to drive this summer.

But tonight again on my third trip out I saw coolent coming out of the expansion bottle over flow. My experience tells me it's something to do with the pressure release valve.

When I picked up the car it did get very hot and boiled a bit in the expanction. I stopped and let it cooldown followed by water and coolent top up. This hasn't happened again since until tonight.

But I thought I'd ask the question. What's causing it.

Tonight the car had run for about 30 mins with a couple of stops and starts of about 10 minutes.

It has has coolent in.

Hi all

Know it's probably the radiator valve cap. But has anyone had this problem and found the solution? Can't drive the car for long periods just in case so any help will be much appreciated.

You can test the expansion bottle and cap by removing it from the car c/w the rubber tube. Cut a Schraeder valve from an old inner tube and secure it in the end of the tube with a hose clip. Use a bicycle pump (preferably with a pressure gauge) and put some pressure into the bottle whilst submerging it in water. It should maintain pressure up to the cap relief pressure (20 psi for Mk2 Stag). If it leaks below that pressure you may have found the problem. If not, I suspect the dreaded HGF, which is not what you want to hear....
