Solvent to remove carpet glue residues?

As title - anyone know of a good solvent to remove the glue used to stick down carpets, looks like Evostik or similar. - Alan

Thinners! Removes virtually anything - but be careful and use sparingly as could also remove paint!

Try white spirit first. It will usually dissolve Evo-Stick, but won't attack your paint.

WD40 is good at removing some glues.

I had this a few weeks ago.
Bought toluene 250ml from ebay. (only 249ml arrived )
Seems to be powerful in this application (glue removal/ thinning), so its probably pretty dangerous
There are 2 secrets to staying on top :- 1. Don't give everything away.
            2.

White spirit is normally my go-to for glue removal. It works great on stubborn sticky labels!

In the distant past we used to mix toluene and white Sprit in a large container, it was used as a cleaner degreaser on the in inside of our rotary wing aircraft RN. I can tell you that it is a mighty dangerous cocktail if used make sure you are wearing all the correct protection especially breathing. I can still remember the after effects to this day as no personal protection gear was ever issued back in them days.

I would recommend toluene but make sure you wear gloves and do it in a well ventilated area as it is not at all good for you!

Depending on the carpet material it depends on what type of thinners as some could do some serious damage especially if its cellulose, I would have gone for white spirit first but as some have recommended toluene that is probably a bit stronger without damaging the carpet fabric.

Well I tried a few of your suggestions, White spirit didn't touch it, cellulose thinners prefered to remove the paint than the glue. The best result was with Hammerite thinners which I believe is a toluene base, it removed the stuff but not very quickly. I am going to have a try with Acetone tomorrow see if it is quicker.

Where do you get Acetone these days from? However please use carefully this will not only remove your paint but turn your carpet into "flakes". Also be aware of fire risk as with all these solvents - but if I remember correctly the vapour from acetone is a particularly high risk. You can get quite a high concentration in nail varnish remover.....

But we buy it for work at higher concentration from a high-street chemist.

                          Stinks, though.

They must add the "stink" these days! It was virtually odourless 50 years ago. Amazed you can buy this at high street chemist . - in what volumes? We used to buy it in from BDH in Winchesters in the 60's.

Just remembered we used to make up small bottles of nail varnish remover for our female colleagues and partners. As I remember about 50/50 acetone/glycerol plus a few drops of cheap perfume. Cannot remember exact formula as was developed by one of my longer serving peers

Anywhere that sells fibreglass resin - it is used to clean up your "equipment" after applying resin/matting. Very good it is too.

                              or good old eBay:

£18.00 inc delivery for 5 litres.
