Newbie rare Stag purchase advice please!

Hi, I've been offered a Stag from a family member and I could do with some advice on how much to pay for it, and what pitfalls I may encounter with it!

Ok, so the car is a 74 (I think) in yellow.
It was owned by my wife's cousins Grsndmother from new. She used it for local trips and the occasional school pickup (my wife remembers being collected in it when she was about 7!)

The lady passed away 6 years ago and the Stag went up for auction. My wife's cousin bought for sentimental reasons but after driving it home and putting it in the garage under a dust sheet hasn't touched it since.

It's an unwelded, original paint, matching numbers car with a genuine 32000miles on the clock.
It's pretty much immaculate with just a couple of tiny rust freckles here and there from basically sitting about most of its life.

They have said to make them an offer, now as it's family we want to pay a fair price.
What do you guys think it's worth as it stands and once back on the road for insurance purposes.

Many thanks in advance for your safe like wisdom.

    Hi Karlito.
Sounds like a good car but it's value would depend on what it would cost to get roadworthy. Anything from a new battery to an engine rebuild, depends on storage conditions, they don't like standing around doing nothing.
There are a few of us around Brighton, including Brighton Bob the expert in all things Stag, who would be prepared to look at it.

    John.

After 6 years storage, almost certainly a rebuild of all the brakes.

        Well, it runs and drives.
I would imagine a brake overhaul, coolant flush and service and tyre check over should see it right.

Welcome to the forum, be aware, despite what others will say, Yellow knocks 50% off the price

Where is the car, a member might be able to pop round and help you appraise it? If it's in Brighton Bob Heritage might be able to help
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Rough guess £3,000 as it is yellow - if it was Carmine I'd have said £8,000

                    Thanks for the help chaps.
The car is in Leicester, I'm no stranger to classic cars (I restore classic vw's for a living) but I've never had a Stag before, hence I'm interested in the opinions people who actually know them (you guys)
I'm going to go and view it next week and will get some pics sorted.

So, to clarify rough estimates of value?

Prices on eBay etc are all over the place

There were many bogus Stags on eBay upto a week ago, but eBay seems to have finally stamped them out. Also, prices on eBay reflect what owners think their cars are worth - you need to look for 'completed' sales to see what cars are really worth (i.e. what buyers will pay for them). If it's been sitting around for 6 years, you probably shouldn't be paying more than £5,000. Garages will also ask for more, but then they have to a) make a profit and b) cover their costs of meeting warranty claims.

As with any classic car the value depends on two things, condition and history, if it’s a one or two owner car with lots of history this can add £££££££ to the value, on the condition side, after sitting for six years there will be a fair amount of mechanical work to be done, if the Stag runs and drives and has service, repair history, old MOT’s, it could be worth between £6,000 and £8,000, with a sympathetic recommissioning it could be worth over £20,000, but keep it original, serious collectors/buyers want original. Original low ownership and millage Stags in excellent condition normally sell through word of mouth.

                          Tony.

Thanks Tony, I believe it has full history going back to day one.
The only thing actually putting me off it is the super low mileage.
I know that if I use it I'm going to devalue it!
