    Petrol filler cap woes

I've just acquired a Stag and am just starting to go over it to sort out the most pressing niggles.

The first is that the petrol filler cap needs attention. When the cap locks, a small pin on the bottom of the locking barrel is supposed to prevent the 'catch' from unhooking from a piece of wire in the main filler body. The pin is rotated out of the way by the key rotating the locking barrel.

On mine, that pin has worn to the extent that, with a bit of pressure, the filler cap can be unlatched without the use of the key. In fact it takes a bit of effort to get the filler cap to latch in the first place.

Can anyone recommend either a repair or a source for a replacement part? The key for the barrel is the same as for the ignition so it is the original.

I took the lock apart, drilled out the old pin and pressed in a new one made of a piece of silver steel.

        Hi Geoff,
If you can tap out the pin, and then replace it with new pin that is a slightly larger diameter, drill the holes for the pin and then glue the new pin in place with loctite. Worked a treat for me and the cap now closes correctly and repeatedly.
        Cheers

I wrote a response, then after clicking 'Post Quick Reply' the message disappeared and I had been logged out.

So in brief (whilst I still appear to be logged in).

The old pin is just under 1/8" (3.175 mm) thick, but thicker than my 3mm drill bit.

Is Loctite good enough given how good petrol is as a solvent?

I can get metric and imperial sizes of silver steel, but only have metric drills.

Should I drill out with a 3mm drill and hope for an interference fit for a 1/8" rod?

Thanks for the input so far.

I used a piece of 3mm silver steel, and drilled with a No.33 drill (2.85mm). It's a press fit, given that most drills cut a little oversize, the nominal 0.15mm is tight enough on mine.
