    Exhaust hangersCheers

Think I've found a new, cheap and very simple method of hanging the exhaust at the rear subframe mounts.
Basically, I've used some exhaust strap readily available from Halfords, cut to the same length as one of the metal hangers and drilled it with two holes spaced exactly the distance between centres of the original strap.
I've used one each side rather than 2 on each exhaust and for the exhaust side of the moment a normal u clamp rather then the c clamp normally used.
Ive found that fitting in this way eliminates entirely any resonance from the exhaust through the subframe but also, the exhaust remains centralised in the subframe at all times.
I'll get some pictures but without wanting to deviate from originaility finding a way around the complex hanger and rubber bushes to me can only be an improvement and, because the hanger is not totally rigid it gets rid of the vibes.

    Cheers,

Hi Mike, this is interesting and would definitely be interested in trying it and seeing photos

Hi Mike, I would also be intersted in seeing some potos of the arrangement. One side of my exhaust pipe is held up by a large jubilee clip as the steel hanger has fractured.

        Hi Danny,

I'll get some pics done but this method still uses the original subframe hanger, just eliminates the double metal hangers that the rubber and metal bushes fit into.
I'm sure a further mod could be made though with a bit of thought.

I mainly came up with this after my car went to a stag specialist with the correct hangers fitted with poly bushes etc and came back having had e new diff put in with both sides hanging from one bracket and using a U clamp rather than the proper ones - I was less than impressed!

        Cheers

          IMG_3571.jpgPhoto of the new hanger.

The ring you see sticking out is the other now unused hanger on the other side, I will remove it once I'm happy this system works, after a year or so

the other photo is of a section of the rubber hanger used.

One other thing to mention which I think is an important "pointer"..

While the exhaust travels through the rear subframe because "it" is fixed to the body of the car in the same way the engine and gearbox are there should be no real movement of the exhaust where it passes through the subframe - unless of course some of the other mounting points have worn or damaged bushes. In other words, I think if your exhaust is attached in the way I now have (or the normal way) and you ensure the pipe is running at equal distance from each side then it should stay there - acceleration, braking or load should have no effect because all fixing points are fixed.
              Hope this makes sense...?

Photo of some I made earlier for Andrew - we'll both test them to see if they are as sensible alternative as I think they are.
