    ZF auto conversion

Hello everybody, I hope you can help with a little info. I have just bought a very nice condition stag with a few 'niggles' to be sorted. The main one at the moment is the ZF conversion. I am very happy with the 'box and the actual gearchanges are almost imperceptable, it just keeps accelerating! However......good as it is, the PO has not changed the selector, so it still has the original 3 speed gate. This means that there is not enough travel to either select the lower two gears at one end, and Park has to be obtained by taking a 'run up' and bangingthe lever against the end of the gate!
What is the usual solution to this? is it just lengthen the slot to allow more travel, although this would ,I think, destroy the plastic surround, or does one normally fit a gate and surround from another vehicle, and if so , which one? Asking a lot, I know, but I'm sure if anyone knows, they will be on here.

    thanks

    Ian

    Hello Ian.
Welcome to the forum. The official conversion from Tate and Lewis uses the original gate, unmodified with no problems. Strange that you are short at both ends of scale. Sounds like there is a problem with the linkage.

Mine is a Tate & Lewis installation and the gate works well except for 1st gear, which I don't use very often.
I think your linkage might need adjusting, but I don't know how to do it.

I've seen that problem with a few conversions. One owner I know cut a small section out if the gate with a round file to allow the lever to move over a wider arc. I altered the bottom of the gear change lever to increase the movement of the box lever relative to the selector so that all 7 choices (PRND321) are available. One of the forum members can make replacement legends with all 7 options instead of the original PRND21.

Are all the gear markings in the correct positions, and who makes them? Thanks.

Hi Clive Tate installed mine and the only thing he changed was the gear selector rod without cutting the gaiter, all works fine
properly the best mod I have done to the car
            good luck Jim

They are on my car. The forum member reads most threads and I am sure he will respond if he is still willing to do them.

I've just re-read the notes I made during my box conversion. What I did to solve the problem was to remove the lever from the side of the ZF box, straighten it, then drill another hole below the original one to fix the selector rod to. This moves the box lever over a greater arc relative to that of the gear lever, bringing all options within the gate.

I used the bmw shifter Bowden cable yes I did reverse the plastic and cut it away to gain full access to all gears but hell it works for me and shows a honest conversion nothing hidden lol
