    Decision time, timing chain parts.

    With my (second) block almost ready I'm looking forward to assembling this Engine so its decision time..

    I purchased a full timing set, chains, guides and gears from Paddocks but see some comments on the durability of these new parts. Often these reports are old and just keep rattling around for years so does anyone know the current state of these parts?

    The parts I took off the engine were in pretty good condition, I think at least the timing chains were attended to not long before its demise.. The crank gears are a little worn but the cam gears look pretty good even look to be German! I'm pretty sure that the numbers are not dates, this car was in a right state.

    So what do you think of these? would you prefer them or the new ones?

    New timing gear components are relatively inexpensive compared to the damage which can result from skimping.
    My advice would be to go with the new parts you have bought from Paddocks who are a reputable supplier.
    When I changed my chains, I replaced sprockets and tensioners.
    There have been many posts comparing the merits of ROLON or German chains.
    I bought both sets and compared them before I decided which to fit. As I say, not expensive so fit the best.

      Hi Terry

      SWAG was a German manufacturer of the Stags sprockets. In 2000 I got the info from the IWIS sales manager that SWAG hat stopped the production some years ago and there were still two sets waiting for a customer. I bought the parts for an "apple and an egg", sold one to a friend in the Swiss club and installed the other set in my Stag in 2003. When I had the camshafts off this winter I found that they look like new after now appr. 100k km. I think you should polish your sprockets to get rid of the marks and use them again.
      BTW. The set of special IWIS chains which I installed at the same time look like new as well.

        OK On the ROLON/IWIS issue. I actually had bought ROLON but will probably go IWIS.

        Those SWAG's look to be in fantastic shape, it's just made me think on it!

          Klaus, searching the forum it seems you may be the IWIS expert!! I have been searching for chains available in USA

          What do you think of these for the Stag (I copied from the iwis catalog)
          oem# description links type IWIS#
          06E.109.465 G68V-2 104 E OP simplex 50033366 (audi)
          11.31.7.834.163 G68V-2 106 E C simplex 50038684 (BMW-M)

          The only thing I do not understand is the "type" do you know what they mean by type E C or E OP

          Both are available here at reasonable prices.

          Thanks
          Terry

            Terry,
            the type G68V-2 is the best you can get from IWIS. I bought exacly these two chains directly from IWIS in Munich as a spare set not knowing that they are for Audi V6 and BMW M5/M6 (due to my 2012 catalogue).

            Abbreviations:
            C=timing chain
            E=endless
            OP=oil pump
            V=reinforced
            VG=riveted link
            MSS=connecting link with safety washer

              That's great, Thanks for the conformation Klaus. The 106 link is also Jaguar EAZ1269

              For our American viewers, Just ordered them from http://www.rmeuropean.com/ $75, free shipping --- well pleased.

              You can search by IWIS part number or they come up as well with the OEM part numbers.
