No bonnet pad, possible heat damage to the paint (Hello All!)

    Morning All,

My Stag has now been resurrected after a long rest, currently with no bonnet pad (removed to clear SU carbs on RV8), I'm concerned about a risk of heat damage to the bonnet paint, has anyone suffered from this?

Good to see so much Stag expertise is available.

    Dibnah.
I know there are stags out there with no pads, but it must make the panel get very hot in the summer, particularly when the car is stationary and the engine running. I suppose that compared with cars left in the sun in really hot countries, it shouldn't be a problem, but over time I suspect it might cause problems, particularly if the bonnet has been resprayed with some paint that may not be as durable as the original. Perhaps you could fit one, but make some neat cut-outs for the carburettors.
    Mike.

      hi Dibnah

Do you still have the pad? cut a square out of it to clear the carbs

Buy heat reflecting sheet to stick on the inside of the bonnet panel where the hole is

        Hi

When I restored my Stag in 2010 which included a full respray (inside and outside of the shell), I took the decision at that time to not refit the bonnet pad. 20,000 miles later and the paint in still in perfect condition on the underside and topside of the bonnet. In my humble opinion the bonnet pad is a total waste of time and money.

heat retention - why would you want to fit an item that keeps heat in the engine bay?!
noise suppression - the car is a open top tourer so wind and road noise abound and it has two large exhaust pipes passing under the floor which has virtually no sound insulation. What difference does an additional small amount of engine noise make?

Save your money and chuck the thing in the bin

        Regards

        Bruce

Totally agree Bruce but then I do have louvres that lets the heat escape.

Not trying to be funny, but thought the bonnet pad was for sound insulation. The only negative I can think of is that the noises from the engine bay such as induction noise will compete with the exhaust note, which is the noise you really want to hear.

Spend your money on 4" tail pipes and won't be an issue if you don't have a bonnet pad.

I live in the tropics of north Queensland, my car hasn't had a bonnet pad for 16 years, however the bonnet is louvred, I have no paint damage. I think you can ditch it with no worries.
                regards,
                Raoul

Thanks for all the replies, I'll leave the pad off for now, plenty of other things to deal with. The Stag has a big bore exhaust, although not certain what diameter.

PS RV8 exhaust noise sounds like a V8 (as you would expect!), but it doesn't match the Stag exhaust noise.

                    Ditch.
No issue here for last 20 years.
I did fit a stick on aluminium insulated pad about 10 years ago but it lasted a very short period and unstuck itself.

The air filter housing on the top of the Stag engine is painted and they don't seem to suffer. The pad rubbed the paint off on mine though, but not a heat related issue!
