    Stag Heads / Engine

Stag Heads .JPGStag Engine Left hand.JPGstag engine right side.JPG

hopefully ive attached the pics - stag went in for service and found it needed two spark plugs to be heli-coiled ? so it was decided to
take the heads off to do this as one had already been done in the past... on getting the heads off it became apparent that we had HGF
at the back pots for both banks - this was not apparent in any form ie pressure build up water in the oil etc.. seems the car had been running
like this for a number of years? it appears that we are down to full engine rebuild and rebore etc and heads away for skimming and valve work

I'm not an expert in any way, so work being carried out for me..

just wanted to share - although I might start a crowd funding for Stag Engine re-build.....

Ouch! I hope you manage to get the right help and get the engine sorted out.

ouch, been there, have the t-shirt and scuffed knuckles

what makes you think a full engine rebuild is required? Was it using oil, noisy etc?

          Hi Richard

more a whilst its out lets see what it needs a belt and braces approach...I only want it out once,

surprisingly it was running well - but I think we just got to it at the right time any longer and it might not have been so !

Jeez, 2 sparklugs fitting leads to engine rebuild? I thought mine was bad where a small hole in the boot floor lead to a body resto!

To be fair, that is quite extreme!

Bloody hell Steve, I said to Deb earlier in the week that I hadent heard anything from you and now you appear on here with your engine in bits, like you say it's in good hands, I guess it's a keeper now then?

Make sure they check the back of the block for flatness. The block often sinks between the bore and the rearmost waterway.

My 1st Stag had receipts for 3 head gasket sets in 15,000 miles. Heads were perfectly flat but the block needed 8 thou off it to true it up. No problems since!

At least half the stag blocks I have measured need skimming, including the one I put together for a mate recently. I could fit a 2 thou feeler gauge under a steel ruler on that one.
                  Get it skimmed I said.

It will be alright he said.

He is going to be really pi**ed off in a few years when the gaskets fail!

Interesting comment about the Block Neil, I would never have thought about checking the block when doing a HGF repair.
Last time I had one was in 2005 and I skimmed the Heads, fitted new gaskets and never even looked at the blocks.

Must have been allright though as that is 12 years ago now and she's still running fine. I did change most other things at the time like oil pump, Inlet Manifold, starter motor, etc.

Thanks have asked for a double check - have been assured that they will check as part of the machining anyway but worth a mention thanks...
if the block needs skimming with the head as well may need inserts cutting into the pistons? will get some more pics

Hi Update - engine stripped and ready to go off for machining - the engine is original un-touched! so not bad for 100+Thousand miles and 1972 Technology!!! seems we did catch it just in time the pistons had started to wear / rub and the crankshaft bearings are down to the copper!? see picture - so will have 10Thousand bored and also new pistons and the crank will need about the same off and tuftrided? new clutch and bearing etc..Stag Bearings.JPG the block will be chemically cleaned and if needed will be skimmed..

Subject to a proper measure of your crank , it may be possible to polish it . was the engine knocking ?....some marks on pistons are cosmetic.....get it measured...then decide if it needs a rebore...
